I'd guess a lot of the people looking to buy a $600 Ableton-exclusive MIDI controller are already bedroom producers, or at least familiar with Ableton. Besides, even Live Intro supports VSTs and Audio Units if you're on a Mac. You can source your plugins (instruments, effects, etc) elsewhere -- there's tons of free ones.
