I'm very interested in the U5s as I'm aiming to get some neutral sounding in-ears. But, are they sibilant on the highs? And do they pair well with iPhone or laptop as a source? Or should I invest on a DAC and Amp as well? My dual BA IM02s paired well with them, and I don't know how it can handle 5 BAs though
Additionally, this is going to be my true high-end purchase for the first time, so I really need to make sure.
I typically enjoy Audio Technica's house sound, and how different are your house sound compared to theirs? For the U5s I'm expecting the highs to be clear as day, but whether it'll be so bright it's sibilant, I'm not sure. And how does the vocal go with these? I'm more into something that's smooth and refined, but detailed. As for bass presence I don't mind it being a tad low, but I don't want it to be weak as well. Perhaps the U4s would be the better option? But seeing the charts on the official website, it seems to me like the vocals are going to be especially dark. I don't think I'd like that. Can someone confirm for me how's the mids on these 2 like?
I'm sorry if I'm not very clear, but I hope I can find an answer here before i commit. It's a pretty big purchase for me (and I believe a lot of others as well

malvinvnvMind you that these are the U4-SE and should not be mistaken with the U4. There is no data on this since this model is strictly made for the Massdrop community, but I own a pair from the last drop and they are phenomenal. I'm not a basshead myself so I opted for a less bassy m15 module equivalent, and boy do the highs extend and the mids have strong presence, with a strong and visceral but background bass. It is quite interesting how the U4-SE are tuned because even though the bass of the U4 is still present, it's like they took a step or two back and made the mids and highs the two main characters of the soundstage.
If you look at the impedance of both pairs, it's low enough to plug them straight into your iPhone or laptop, sending enough juice to drive every driver, but for an investment in the future, try upgrading the cable. I went from a stock cable to an 8-core cable from Labkable and now I can tell every driver is working to its fullest potential.

DicloneusThanks for that response @Dicloneus that actually helped me out as well :) I'm coming from a set of UE900s which I somehow lost and have been wanting to replace them for a long time just haven't had the funds to do it. Based on your response I think the U4-SE would suit me over the U5. Can I ask what cable you bought from Labkable?

DicloneusThanks for the reply! It helps a lot!
If you're okay with it, I'd like to ask another question. In your own definition, how would you describe the sound? Is it more V-shaped or more along the lines of being warm but balanced?

malvinvnvI cannot describe U4-SE in the most conventional of ways since it is such a unique sound to others I have encountered. The legacy of the U4 is there in the bass, but since the U4-SE is designed in a way that the sound tubes for the two bass and one mid drivers are directly routed to the apex port (mine is the ADEL port), this takes care of the extra boomy sound (pneumatic pressure) that's claimed to be damaging to the eardrums. When you look at the stem of the earphones, all the models have 4 bores: 1 each for high, mid, and low, and 1 for the apex/ADEL port. But U4-SE only has 2: - one for apex/ADEL port (As I stated earlier that the bass and mid outlet is combined into one and routed to the apex port before it reaches your ears, there's only one outlet.) - and one for the high This design was inspired by the V-Series Qi model, which is why you may spot the similarities.
Since the bass and mid drivers are combined into one, this formulates a more uniform sound, likened by audiophiles and music lovers/enthusiasts rather than for people using them as monitors. With the high driver having a bore on its own, the highs are present but tuned just enough that it wouldn't cause much sibilance (at least for me).
Of course this information is based off the U4-SE ADEL, and I have no idea whether 64audio tweaked the architecture for the apex version. Hope this gives you a better idea of how they sound like.
tl;dr = they sound musical and more uniform (which is how music should be listened to anyway... based on my belief ;p ) rather than having a monitor-like separation.

DicloneusHi, how do you compare the bass quantity between U4SE vs U10? Is it the bass on U4SE more bigger than u10 but less than U12? Thanks.

izzuera123I listen to a whole wack load, from classical (Mozart), metal (Sonata Arctica, Ensiferum, etc.), vocals (Sarah Alainn), J-Pop, J-Rock, Game/Anime/Movie soundtracks, etc. NieR: Replicant's Songs of the Ancients/Fate is the song I use to benchmark most of my audio equipment though. This song begins with a strong bass drum punch so I can test the lows, the female vocals and strings extend fairly wide too so I can test the mids there, and the nice touch of the crash cymbals and the initial impact of the picks/nails strumming the acoustic guitar are also included to test the highs. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u5xZbJDZZo4
I was previously using UE's Triple Fi 10 pro (triple BA, 2 way drivers) and upgraded to the U4-SE, and I can say it was one of the greatest investments I made in a while.

bonafpThat's a question I should reserve for other U10 users in the community to handle. I myself haven't auditioned the U10 to get a clear idea of what it had to offer.
For the U4-SE though, imagine a symphony orchestra. The Bass Drum is definitely present and is visceral. But it isn't pretentious screaming "I'M THE MAIN CHARACTER." It is just enough to well complement and pair with the mids and the highs. These aren't bass heavy. They do have significant amount of bass as it's based off of the bass-heavy U4, but the mid and high drivers are tuned to make it a more balanced (not flat) sound signature.
I'm sorry if this doesn't make much sense to you, but the conventional description of "It's warm" "It's flat" "It's V-shaped" etc. etc. just won't do it justice for these fantastic earphones (I wouldn't call them IEMs since I believe these are really not meant for monitoring). Absolutely a unique sound.

ChoonI purchased it used in Japan for 44900yen (no box, no fabric pouch. just the cable). It's a hybrid 8-wire cable of silver gold, silver plated copper and copper conductors, as stated by a respectable reviewer on Head-Fi. You can read more about it here: https://www.head-fi.org/f/showcase/labkable-master-series-takumi-iem-cable.21294/reviews#review-15113 It's a thing of beauty, both in terms of sound signature and craftsmanship.
