Let's see... I could spend $18 on a hipster USB cable or I could spend $1.80 on a normal one....

zoomorphFair enough assessment. But typically if you're into keyboards and caps, you could say the same thing.
This is a handmade cable that takes a while to make and if you see value in the work, then get one:). It all depends if you see the value in the creation aspect of it.

jchan94"Value in the creation aspect of it"? Nonsense. It all depends how much money you have to burn on pointless overpriced junk to trick yourself into feeling better about yourself. Luckily for you, there's no shortage of hipsters on massdrop willing to buy this kind of stuff. Unless they faked the 200 purchased number, which wouldn't surprise me either.

jchan94So to be clear, this is just a standard USB cable with some form of coating? Does the coating provide any form of useful shielding? Is there a need to shield USB cables beyond the normal rubber coating they usually come with?

BaddogHey Baddog,
Here are the answers to your questions.
1) Yes, Standard USB cable with Paracord Sleeving.
2) If you mean by paracord, then it is just aesthetics. If you mean techflex, it gives it a more rugged feel & weight. It definitely makes the cable more durable if anything.
3) There is no need to shield cables beyond rubber coating if we're talking about functionality.
Hope that answers your questions!

zoomorphActually there is plenty of value, it's just a niche product. I've been looking for some cool USB cables like this for a really long time and they simply don't exist for mass market. One's options are further limited if a mini-USB cable is necessary, as the micro-USB standard has consumed most of the market share.
To give you a sense of perspective: I'm typing on a $330 keyboard connected to a $1 USB cable. Why? Not because I'm trying to save money, that's for sure. I just haven't found any nicer cables. As shallow as it sounds, aesthetics is very important to me and frankly I haven't seen anything that looks better than a standard black or white USB cable.
Up until now, that is! Thanks @jchan94

nickm50I understand that there's a niche market and this is a product aimed at the market. I myself own a mech and a few keycap sets. But in the end, this isn't the only source of unique cables for mechs, there are much better options. Just looking at this, it's just paracord covering and the heat shrink tubing to close off the ends is just amateurish. The price point just doesn't make sense when you see things like Pexon cables that are finished nicely at an identical price point. The way I see it, it's not a matter of the nicheness of the market but just an absurd price point.

charlizardThat's weird because while I believe Pexon makes great cables, but his price point is not there. His shipping is $15 to the US and most people who use Massdrop are in the US at the moment. Also, he cables start at about $17 usd. Pexon is great for Europe destinations, and it would be great to have Pexon be the Europe cable guy, and jchan94 or 90n1ne to be the US guys. And Pexon does make a great quality product, no doubt, but it's hard to find something like this on the market and this price point.
Granted, the heatshrink in the middle is amateur, but this is a handmade product that was made with some creative idea. It hasn't been seen before, and that's where it wins imo.
Oh, and I haven't bought anything from jchan94, but he does seem to be an active community member, which makes me want to support him in a future purchase. Maybe when the site is back up, I'll grab something from him site:)
