I thought I would Add just a little bit more to the discussion.

I have been following this product since it was announced on kickstarter some time ago. I believe the idea is fantastic, but the developer needs to improve some fundamental shortcomings as well as address some customer support issues.

Here is a yelp page of an actual store in San Francisco. The latest 5 star reviews look a little suspicious in contrast to the stark 1 star reviews that are a little bit older. But if you'll notice, most of the conversation is about poor customer service (especially failure to take ownership of some issues), poor substrate material, poor filtration system ext. Basically all fixable problems with no true fundamental issues. There are even experts chiming in saying what needs to be done, all landing on deaf ears of the vendor. Such a shame.

http://www.yelp.com/biz/jelly-fish-art-san-francisco

Sorry, I had to reply to this. According to the forums, your first product was actually a retro-fitted BiOrb cylinder tank. I've been following this kreisel tank since the kickstarter and you've been developing this particular tank since 2011?(from the articles I've read at least) I also read that the tanks didn't ship until late q3/q4 of 2012 so technically you can only claim to have less than a years worth of actual testing on this tank. Now I do like to read reviews but it's hard to take these new 5-star glowing reviews without a grain of salt, considering a recent news article that found that almost 20% of all yelp reviews are planted:
http://www.marketwatch.com/story/20-of-yelp-reviews-are-fake-2013-09-24?link=MW_latest_news

I'm not trying to slander, I really REALLY want this product to succeed but I've been burned too many times by kickstarter projects that either didn't deliver or didn't deliver a product as was described. I feel shelling out $450+ to beta-test a product really hard to swallow.
Diniven@Diniven Yes, that's true, even before we were manufacturing our own tank I was retrofitting biOrbs so they could hold jellyfish. Obviously this wasn't ideal for jellies, which is why I started designing a jellyfish tank from scratch. I started designing and testing the tank in 2010 (it took over a year before we were ready to launch it at Global Pet Expo and on Kickstarter in 2011). So we have now been testing the tank for three years. Also, I started the company Jellyfish Art in 2007 (you can see a 2009 article in the NY Times about it here: http://www.nytimes.com/2009/03/14/technology/start-ups/14startup.html), so my job has been jellyfish for 6+ years.

Regarding the article on Yelp reviews, I wouldn't even know where to begin to hire "freelance writers from Philippines, Bangladesh and Eastern Europe" to write Yelp reviews for us, so no, we don't do that.

Hope that answers some of your questions.

How exactly do you dehydrate the hydrazoa??? Also, what species are these?

travis.koHey @travis.ko can you clarify your question? Are you asking if the jellyfish are dehydrated? If so, they are not dehydrated, but shipped live by next day air. These are Moon Jellyfish: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aurelia_aurita

Don't humans "trap" enough animals for our personal "amusement" that we now need to use the excuse of "ART" to justify another species being exploited!!!

Good News Everyone!

I just spoke with Alex, and he's allowing us to lower the final drop to just 10 units and still get it for $349.99! In addition to that, free shipping still kicks in if we reach 25 units sold.

Cheers!
Alex, designer of the Desktop Jellyfish Tank here. Indeed these jellyfish are live pets that require maintenance, but that article from reefbuilders was a little one-sided and inaccurate. We shipped a LOT of these units when we ran our Kickstarter two years ago and some people had trouble maintaining their jellies, but we offer an Arrive Alive guarantee and give free replacements if they don't survive more than a few days in your tank. Also, they mentioned that substrate is bad for jellyfish, which is simply not true. The substrate is necessary for filtration and is specifically designed to be non-abrasive for the jellyfish.

There's a forum article lower on this thread that shows a customer setting up and using their tank happily: http://www.reefersanonymous.net/index.php?/topic/1586-agent462s-jellyfish-tank/

We've even made a few improvements on the product since launching the Kickstarter, including a new non-frozen food, more dispersed water intakes at the bottom of the tank, guards on the bubble channel to keep jellyfish away from suction points, and a denser substrate that accomplishes more filtration.

I'll check this thread periodically so let me know if you have any questions!

I at one time was very interested in buying one, but after doing some research I honestly found that it has allot of what seems like legitimate complaints about the product that one should know before purchasing.

http://reefbuilders.com/2012/03/18/desktop-jelly-fish-tank-turns-sting-owners/

One of the saddest things I read about was the filter sucking the jellies and shredding them to pieces :(

mebkHey mebk,

Thanks for your input, the filter that you talk about is actually not a filter. It's a bubble channel that pushes the water from bottom to the top along the perimeter of the tank. This low water pressure makes the water circulate in a spin cycle keeping the jellies constantly moving. Having the rock substrate prevents the jellies from getting sucked into the bubble channel, also there is an adjustment valve that you should be monitoring to make sure that the bubbles are not too big (which might cause the suction you're talking about).

mebkI understand the substrate is necessary but even the positive review you linked, they were the cause of a jelly getting stuck and dieing. I loved the idea but there seems to be too many design flaws for me to "accidentally" kill this creature. The negative reviews are damning Im afraid @mebk thank you for sharing that thread.

As for the positive review? This follow-up statement made up my mind: http://www.reefersanonymous.net/index.php?/topic/1586-agent462s-jellyfish-tank/page__st__20#entry29654

As a reviewer I know how bad negative feedback can be so I offer you the same advice... seek out people in the fish tank industry and send them units to review. There is more negative feedback than positive which hurts the bottom line. Good luck with the drop.

OrphicDragon@OrphicDragon I agree with everything you say. It's not a walk in the park, but if you do your homework you can have something pretty spectacular displayed in your home. Jellyfish Art has some great tips on keep your jellies healthy and the tank clean. We extended this drop to 2 weeks because in the end you're buying something alive and the last thing you want to do is kill these guys because a lack of education in the product itself.

I have heard these things are extremely problematic.

mebkI have as well, but after reading through most of the complaints, I don't think the bulk of the problem is product based. Definitely seems to be a serious flaw in the filtration but since I haven't put my paws on one I can't say if it's an owner/substrate or what have you kinda thing. I'm sure there are mods if there is a flaw. Keepers are excellent for that. :D

I've kept full reef tanks w/refug and chillers full rig all the bells and whistles as well as nano's and the complaints and issues with that are VERY much the same as the ones with this "Jelly Kit". People had a goldfish when they were 5 and figure they can handle this. There is a lot of upkeep. It gets easier as your environment stabilizes and the biofilters kick in, but you have to gut it out and do the work if you want the reward.

Overfeeding alone did quite a few of these in.

A LOT of people do not seem to understand the importance of clean up crews and PROPER feeding. You overfeed in a tank environment you don't get fat fish, you get toxic water.

YOUR location matters. If it gets cold in the winter, you'll need a heater. If you live in Florida (like me) good possibility you could need a chiller. You want to be mid 70*'s. It's not necessary to have a chiller but it depends on where you are keeping this.

For marine keepers: It's not the same. It's why I haven't purchased one...yet.

If you don't have time, energy and a decent attention span, you should probably do some more research.

Edit: It's also rather insane how many people don't know the life span of the moon jelly. You'll get a year-ish.
