Slimmer & Lighter, With RGB Backlighting

One of our most popular community-designed keyboards to date, the ortholinear 40% Planck Mechanical Keyboard is hailed for its unique layout, compact form factor, and build quality. Now it’s back with brand-new Kailh low-profile switches and bright RGB backlighting to make it pop off your desktop. Of course, what made it a hit in the first place still rings true: It’s laid out so that every key is within two units of your fingers on the home row, thus minimizing finger travel. It also has a smaller space bar, which makes it easier to use your thumbs to access additional layers via the “raise” and “lower” keys. The keyboard comes assembled or in an unassembled kit. The kit consists of a PCB, a milled aluminum bottom, and your choice of switches and keycaps; the assembled version is ready to use.

Note: The base price is for the assembled Planck Light. It comes in black with tactile switches, black alphas, and white modifiers; in navy with clicky switches, white alphas, and black modifiers; or in silver with linear switches, white alphas, and black modifiers. At checkout, you can get the unassembled kit with your choice of any of the above combinations—including all blank semi-translucent white keycaps—for (- $10). You can also add a carrying sleeve for (+ $8). If you select an assembled keyboard, the other selections at checkout will not apply.

Fully Programmable Lighting & PCB

The Planck Light is so named for a couple reasons, the main one being its fully programmable RGB backlighting. With bright surface-mounted LEDs, it allows you to infinitely customize the lighting down to a per-key basis. The PCB features an AVR chip and can be programmed to to your liking, too. It comes pre-programmed with the standard layout, but also has a reset button to reprogram the keyboard. It’s compatible with Kailh PG1350 "Chocolate" switch footprints, and all components of the board have been pre-soldered so the PCB is ready for key switches.

Low-Profile Switches & Shine-Through Keycaps

The other reason it’s called the Planck Light? It’s made with a set of brand-new Kailh low-profile switches that reduce the weight and overall thickness of the keyboard. Made using a different keycap mounting method, the low-profile switches are about half as tall as standard MX switches and have a shorter actuation distance for speedy typing. The keycaps, too, have been overhauled. Now slimmer than ever, they’re made from doubleshot PBT with shine-through legends to enhance the bright RGBs.

Anodized Aluminum Case in 4 Colors

The Planck Light’s milled bottom is made from a single piece of aluminum with 2-millimeter walls. It’s anodized with a smooth finish in your choice of black, orange, navy, or silver. A hole near the USB port allows easy access to the reset button on the PCB. The kit has all the hardware you need to assemble the keyboard, plus four 3M rubber feet so it won’t slide around on your desktop.

Beeps & Boops

Also notable, the PCB is outfitted with a dual-channel speaker that can play two notes at once (an upgrade from the previous version). In the default firmware this will make a few different noises—like a short series of beeps on startup, notifications when you put the board into Device Firmware Upgrade (DFU) mode, plus noises when you change the default layout to prevent mishaps when typing quickly. The speaker can be disabled by flashing new firmware. A noiseless version of the default firmware is available on the GitHub.
