Are there really ten people out there who've committed to buy this at this price? If any of you are reading this, can you explain why you'd do that when it's available for nearly $100 cheaper elsewhere?

sphanley I believe people buy items (whatever category) is because there is value to be found on Massdrop... not necessarily the lowest price. Other commenters posted links to a Chinese website (Gearbest) and they have horrible customer reviews... why would I spend $100 less and get defective merchandise or have it not arrive at all? I find my best deals on Massdrop- just my 2¢ worth!

applguyI get that, but here's the thing though - this printer kit is the same junk from China, whether you get it here or from Gearbest. If someone is going to $250 for this fire hazard here rather than the ~$168 direct from China, they'd be endlessly better off forking over an extra $50 and buying a Wanhao Duplicator i3 or the likes - this is a bad buy at any price, but ESPECIALLY at this huge markup.

sphanleyFor anyone thinking I'm being hyperbolic, here's a real owner testimonial on this exact printer: https://www.reddit.com/r/3Dprinting/comments/6cekgk/house_fire_thanks_to_cheap_printer_from_china/

sphanleyHi, I viewed the Reddit link of the 'house_fire' and a few things jumped out. -First- with any 3D-Printer it is best to monitor the progress of your print. Any device that literally melts plastic to make a part is something you need to either watch, or install a Web-Enabled-Web-Cam to monitor the Printer. -Secondly- the manufacturer should enable 'Runaway-Thermal-Protection' for US Sold 3D Printers. This unfortunately isn't a standard feature for 3D Printers and the Anet A8 by default has this 'Disabled' in the firmware... which is clearly unsafe. The Thermal Runaway Protection can be enabled, but it should be something that 'ALL' Manufacturers should be required to enable if they want to sell their products here in the U.S. -I couldn't find a Winhao Duplicator i3 for less than $459 (from Winhao Website). At least when you buy it from Massdrop (and you live in the US) it will be shipped from the US!

applguyThe Duplicator i3 is $300 at Micro Center, available for in store pickup in the US: http://www.microcenter.com/product/472634/wanhao_duplicator_i3
It's also available for approx $317 rebranded as the Maker Select V2 from Monoprice.
Hands down a better buy than this drop.

sphanleyAlso, @applguy Gearbest has warehouses in the US and Hong Kong usually with two separate prices, so you could pay like $10 extra to get it shipped from the US (it's actually $5 cheaper to buy it from the US warehouse right now). But like @sphanley said, it's going to be the same junk regardless of what retailer you buy it from. I wouldn't expect a macbook bought from the Apple store to perform any different if purchased from BestBuy or WalMart, stores with VERY different ratings.

applguyThe problem is that this IS the same thing being sold on gearbeat banggood and ebay. Massdrop isnt getting some magical high quality version, it’s trhe same damn thing and they’re marking it up 60% for no added value. They did this with Apple TV a few years ago and were charging Not only more than if you went to any retail store and bought it but more than Apple’s set pricing(which btw is against their reseller policy, that’s why whatever reputable store you go to you’ll never pay more than what Apple charges) sometimes you can find good deals, but here few and far between. Save you money, and get it a lot sooner by purchasing it else where.
