Agreed on the 750... I was only correcting the comparison to my 555 mkii which I'm very happy with, but would consider upgrading if there was something of worth/value....and I don't think the 815 first he bill... But if your 750 is for sale...😋

Yes. On higher end stereo systems , the control unit (inputs, volume, balance, inputs, switching, etc. ) controls are separate from the amplifier. This control unit is called a preamplifier. You need a dedicated power amplifier to connect to it and then to the speakers. The reason why they do this is so you can build a high quality preamplifier and a high quality power amplifier separately, focusing on making the best possible sound. If you want even better sound, get two mono power amps for each channel.

The GFP-750 is a far superior preamp in every relevant way, designed by Nelson Pass and earning a coveted Stereophile Class A rating among preamps costing many times as much. The listening is where it matters. They still sell for upwards of $1000 nearly two decades later but I'll be keeping mine.

Mark3DNelson Pass had nothing to do with any Adcom preamp. His magic touch was on the 535 power amp. Regardless, the 750 seems to be the highest rated Adcom preamp made.

Personally I'm just happy to see a preamp on Massdrop, especially with a phono input.

I can say that MD is not intended for Canada based shoppers. As usual, cost of shipping to Canada is way more than to the Europe, Asia, and the Middle East considering it's next door neighbor to the US. Canada is one of the most expensive countries MD charges to ship to. I do several transactions south of the border each year and I know well shipping costs between the 2 country. For example, a shipment from NY or Chicago to Toronto Canada costs less than to Los Angeles California. No matter it is a small item or a big and heavy one, Canadian will pay more for shipment than many countries from the rest of the world. It is a sad reality you have to live with, at least for now!

Thx oldgearhead! I compared those specs w/ my gfp 555mkii from the '90's and it blows this one away....the s/n ratios and thd%'s are far better on the gfp555mkii.... I guess this unit wouldn't really be an upgrade....

Agreed... Seems like a legacy product.... But tech specs are very limited on the Massdrop site... What are the s/n ratios and thd? Would be helpful

shangThe official link is here: http://www.adcom-usa.com/gfp-815
There is a pdf with all the specs and a list of commands that can be sent to the RS-232 port. Does anyone have an RS-232 any longer?

oldgearheadYes, if you use arduino or raspberry pi to control your system. For us gear heads fronting your system with a simple web page or app and hooking your arduino/pi up to your network is ideal. RS-232 LIVES!

As for the subwoofer problem, a speaker setup with a passive subwoofer is appropriate for a 2-channel stereo system. I believe that you will find that this is a legacy product from around 2010. Massdrop is a good way for manufacturers to unload older stock. Being old does not mean that these are not still good products. And yes, a buyer should always be aware of what they are buying.

For this much money and in this day and age it really should have 2 sets of pre-outs or 1 set of pre-outs and a subwoofer out. Also, I agree the wording about powering speakers is wrong and Massdrop should fix that.

"Designed to power two-channel speakers" is misleading. This is a preamp. An additional power amp is required to power traditional stereo speakers. Or, the speakers will need to be self-powered. A common setup would be the following:
turntable -> Adcom GFP-815 -> stereo power amp -> stereo speakers

BIG_DaveWould be nice if they offered a moderately powered Adcom amp to go with this. Please note the lack of a single channel sub-woofer feed and accompanying hipass/lowpass filter circuit before you even think about using this to front a 2.1 channel self-powered speaker system. Adcom makes very nice gear, but know what you're buying.

BIG_DaveAgreed, it should be something like designed to control a stereo pair of speakers or some variant. It is a most likely a massdrop editor error, not a mislead from Adcom. In fairness, the subtitle of that paragraph is "The Magic of 2-Channel Audio".
