The AF-P newer version is a 70-300 with much faster focusing, but only works on newer DX cameras or fairly new with upgraded firmware. A much better lens, IMHO.

TimeOrMoneyIf you go for the AF-P versions (AF-P 70-300) be sure you get one with VR. Nikon offers 2 versions of it (with VR & without) and the version WITHOUT VR is often included in bundles -which sucks as VR is super handy in this focal length range- so there are tons of them out there almost unused for sale by people who realize later that they need/want a telephoto with VR.
Also, just to add to the confusion - like you said above, these new AF-P lenses only work (completely) with the newest bodies. (D3300,D3400,D5300,D5500,D5600,D7500, etc) - on some others (like the D7100,D7200 & others) they will work but the firmware has never been updated to give you a menu item to shut VR off - so good luck using a tripod with it. Others- like the D7000 and below won't AF, etc.
