is this a better headphone amp/dac than the Aune X1S ?

gluonMost likely not. X1S focuses on headphones more than this TEAC amp. Comparing apples and oranges too, so hard to say unless I had them both.

gluonYa, if not for several weird issues I'd buy this too. How do you like the aune X1s? Really tempted to buy it as it seems amazing.

datyetiWell, the Aune x1s really sounds good and very very clean, with big sound stage and precise positioning.
Compared with the FiiO e10K that I got, there is like, much more light in the rather much bigger room all of a sudden :). Everything is clearer and especially you sense that once you start playing good files, though there is a big difference in li'l' dirty mp3's too. So, I really like it, for the sound, as it makes anything else sound like garbage and makes even the humble AKG 240 mk2 sound amazing. It puts bass back to them, it makes their sound stage incredibly wide and everything sounds like in it's place, not all at once or randomly spread anymore. I use it with dt 990's, 770's, akg 240 and an yamaha hph200 sometimes and it makes them sound much better and precise. So, I can only wonder for now what it does to some higher end things, though I can only tell you that when I will get the akg 712 pro's, which should be better than what I got.
The difference between x1s and the e10k or other lower ends is that those, won't scale up, properly with your headphones or your music files. The difference dramatically increase between them, when you start feeding the higher quality music to them... then the e10k stops at some point, while the x1s start revealing more and more like you wonder if there is much more left aside. Interesting stuff.
I also, feed the x1s, with output from e10k dac and... the quality is clearly higher than out of the e10k's amp exit, it's lower than the x1s alone. Sound stage is smaller and separation is not that good, so x1s, seems to be really well put together.
The only downside for me is the lack of more numbs and buttons on it lol. But that's not a big issue, If i had buttons then I'd wanted something with less and so on, probably. We're weird. X1s is really good. Now I start wondering how would it look with an x7s on top of it :))

gluonThanks. I've heard the akg 712s, they're really nice. Just all around very enjoyable headphones in every way/genre that I listened to.

gluonI had the version of this with a CD player, the CR-H101. I had a difficult time distinguishing between its amp and my O2 with a K7XX (which isn't particularly difficult to drive). I haven't compared DACs yet.

bilditup1I literally can't tell my O2 and topping A30 apart, they sound at least 97% identical. I just love this thing for the remote and price. Really want a digital amp/dac/speaker amp combo but there's few and they all have weird things about them that are deal breakers.

datyetiThough... now they put the Teac AI-301DA on drop. Thinking if it's worth switching the x1s again hmm..

gluonHmm. For that you get a more powerful speaker-amp section and DSD support. It's a decent upgrade for $80, but only if you need those things.

gluonYa it's nice, although maybe not that nice for the price. It's kind of a jack of all trades, master of none so unless it's really convenient for you and you want it I wouldn't bother. Although I'd choose it over the AI-101 since it has win10 support and a firmgrade update usb slot, or at least I think it does.

datyetiDid they really leave that out of the more expensive model? That's a pretty grave oversight. I agree that the draw of these things, particularly the CR-H101 model with the CD player and FM radio, is convenience above all. At MSRP they are most certainly not worth it, but at these prices they're worth a look.

bilditup1If you look on their website, it states that the 101 has compatibility with win7 -8.1, and the 301 has those and win10. So idk specifics, but it seems that they either aren't going to update both of them, or only the 301. Possibly, they might release newer versions of these products since they've been out awhile now, who knows, that'd be awesome if they did and updated and fixed all the issues. The 101 would take the market probably if it upgraded the 1/8" jack to 1/4" jack and improved the power output, and if they fixed the usb issues. It'd the best all around combo unit, especially for 200 like it is here.

datyetiHmm. It looks like the driver for the AI-101DA is specifically different from virtually the entire rest of the TEAC's desktop DAC line. Very strange. I wonder if the general driver for those (see for example here: http://www.teac.com/product/cr-h101/downloads/ ) would work with it, if forced? Or if the 101 actually is compatible with Win10 but they didn't update the site accordingly? I don't think the jack size or power really matter much, but then again perception is king when it comes to these things, so you're probably right.

bilditup1Ya power doesn't matter much to me either, and its a good enough amp, although 1/4 is much better for longevity and durability sake. I read all the comments on the 101 drop and there were several people who found out win10 doesn't work with it, unless using optical. Its the usb stuff with the 101 that kills it for, besides the 3.5mm headphone port.

bilditup1I will probably skip it since I'm thinking to get some small powered monitors, which should do well with the x1s. I don't think the quality is better and the aune does dsd also though again... those buttons :D

datyetithe 101 works fine with win 10 i purchased the 101 purely for the dual optical ports one goes to cable box the other to my xbox one and my computer is connected by usb. I use an adapter for 1/4" purposes.. with win 10 all i did was plug in usb cable and it worked.

REVMADOK, thanks for chiming in with this. I had to use their UAC 2.0 drivers with my CR-H101, and those for the AI-101DA have not been updated yet. Hopefully others will chime in with their experience as well. If this does indeed work with Win10 consistently then the case for EOL becomes weaker.

REVMADDang nice! Only have gone off of what I read. Do you notice any lag using usb input? Do you have the creator's update by chance? The newest big update I think that may or may not be causing issues.

REVMADThat's good to know. It must be some strange thing you gotta have or do in windows that effects the 101-da. Maybe conflicting drivers or something. Who knows.
