I just received this and hooked into my iMac 5k via USB and connection is not good. USB, Uncovert, and RC light blinking and my JBL LSR305s are making pop sound every 10 sec.
I tried optic connection which works fine, but then whenever there is no sound coming out, my speakers are making very loud white noise/hum. This continues when I turn off Teac ai-101 or mac. I like the sound a lot of this thing but I'm curious if others are also having trouble with USB cable when using OSX 10.12.

spotone55hey there, how do you like using the LSR305 with this amp? I was thinking about getting one of these but decided not to pull the trigger after reading through the discussion...

hereandthereThe sound is really great. Previously I used DAC that was for headphone and Teac greatly improved bass tightness and general sound seperation.

hereandthereDO NOT run speaker outs into powered speakers without something to convert it to a line-level signal in-between. That cable is not designed for line-level applications (ie the ones in powered monitors) spotone55 is risking their equipment and/or residence with what they are doing.

spotone55You may have gotten the notification when I replied to hereandthere but I couldn't help but reply directly to advise that you really shouldn't be using that cable. Those cables are designed for massive PA/Subwoofer passive speakers to be driven by a power amp. You are risking over-driving your powered monitors, clipping them, frying them and who knows what other electrical atrocities. Just trying to be a good e-citizen, hope you don't take offense.

ElectronicVicesI agree with you. LSR305 had receiving level change +4db and -10db, and changing to -10db helped but not completely resolved hiss issue. LSR305 needs to be driven by balanced cables which AI-101DA don't have. I've been using with this setup for a week now and seems to be working fine with slight hiss when idle. Long term I would change the DAC that has balanced output.

spotone55For the price a Schiit Jotunheim might be right up your alley, the Emotiva Stealth DAC1 would also be a good move IMO. When I separate my HT and Hifi again I was planning on picking up the stealth to run xlr to my monoblocks

spotone55I experienced the white noise too. It existed in the background. Even when I played a soft music, I could hear the white noise. Can anyone tell me how to get rid of the white noise please. UPDATE: After I changed the power source to a power cleaner, the white noise disappear--ZERO hum. For me, the problem is solved. I got a clean and quality sound from this thing. Keep!

ElectronicVicesWait you are saying to thick cables can make speakers clip? Seriously clipping is caused by turning a amp up which doesn't have enough power for the speaker say a 20 watt amp on 80 watt speakers will definitly clip at full volume even on 3 qaurters probably. This is why I always get a amp with a higher power output than the speakers i'm using. I got a 100 Watt NAD 3400 on my B&W DM 110's 80 Watt and god is sounds great and no trace of clipping. Before the speakers even start to clip you can hear the woofers hit the back of the spider which is bad but you hear it instantly when it goes wrong rather reach physical speaker limitations than clipping it. I'm also running a nad 7020 basicly a nad 3020 with a tuner on a set of mission 760's I will probably upgrade to genelec's in the future though.

Tom-J-SNo the user is taking the speaker level output of this unit and using that to run to the trs line level input of their powered monitors. As the speaker output is variable and intended to drive devices with resistances from 4/6 to 16 ohms it is not apples to apples when running that same output to something with 600ohm input impedance... if the voltage output exceeds the input specifications of the powered monitors you can overdrive the input stage which results in a rounded off sine wave (aka clipped). This has nothing to do with the gauge of the cable but the potential to overdrive the input. The clipping example you've provided corresponds to overdrawing the amplifier, pushing it to high levels of distortion which A) Sounds bad and B) could also damage your speakers depending on various factors.
