I ordered the AKG K612 Pro from Amazon and got them yesterday. Love love love these cans! Clear, articulate, and plenty of clean, powerful bass. I really don't understand why people say the bass is light on these cans. But then I'm not a basshead and don't really listen to much EDM or rap. But when I do, the bass is still there.
So now I'm looking to try different amps with it. I've got a Fiio A3, a CI Audio VHP-1, and a vintage Parasound P-HP850 preamp with a dedicated headphone amp. I even have a Avantree Clipper Pro Bluetooth transmitter and tried it. Amazing sound. Anyway, I want to go the tube route this time so it should be fun researching it all.

housepianistWhat other headphones do you own? I'm looking to upgrade my headphone collection by adding my first headphone over $100, but I'm not sure which to choose. The reviews saying that the AKG K612 Pro ia sibilant and shrieky holds me back from really considering them but the price is really tempting. Other headphones like the Soundmagic HP150, Fostex T50rp MK3, or maybe a Beyerdynamic DT 770 or DT 880. Or maybe a AD series headphone as they maybe less sibilant than the K612 Pro.

master_sifuI've heard the same things said about the K612Pro's being strident and maybe even etchy in the upper treble. I have some really "hot" recordings and some treble-heavy tracks that can certainly sound piercing to my ears but I think that's just the resolution powers of these cans. Only at the most insane volumes with the most insanely bright music can make these cans sound screechy but even then it's not sizzly or unbearable. Having said that, I'm also a professional musician (pianist) and I'm use to a live and dynamic sound so it could be that the 612's appeal to me more. On the other hand, I have moods where I want something a little more laid back so I pop in my Massdrop Edition Final Audio Heaven III's IEMs. They have a little more bass to them with only a slightly rolled-off treble but like the 612's, they have a glorious midrange. I'm a midrange junky so they both work for me.
I have too many IEMs to list here but for actual cans, I have the Grado SR325's and the Sennheiser HD595's, both over 15 years old so I don't listen much to them anymore. I can't speak for the other cans you listed but I guess it's what you want in sound presentation. Had I not purchased the 612's, I may have jumped on these K553's but closed cans scare me and I don't like risking greater bass that could end up being a muddy lower midrange mess.
