There is a rather easy mod for this if you feel adventurous.

you know sir, thats an asertion alot of people have been making, and i myself was thinking once upon a time, due to all the heapdhones which were put into the repair pile for cables. But you know what, this phone has alot of potential at a fantastic price, attenuate the below 105hz frequencies by 4db, OR, boost the 110hz to 4000hz by 4db and you've got a long line of good volume frequency response uniformity, leagues beyond price bound competitors. I think it's also excellent build quality, alight for isolation, and super sensitive, and fairly comfortable for most dimensioned people.. it has both a bendy band, swivel/twist/rotate, and vertical planar angle adjustments. This headphone can be well driven out of almost any 32ohm load consumer device, pending it`s noise floor is bearable. So i say, if the long cord bothers you, then, If your worried about breakage, i`ll tell you this cable setup is very rugged, and tough, also that even plug in cable can have their sockets loose connection. That there is less solder in the signal path when there are less sockets and excess connections.. with either a 3ft cable and an extension you have the extension plug and a second jack, with plug-into--can type builds you have the extra plug and the extra jack again, just something to think about. the 3 meter cable is long, and i`d say it`s good home bound, if you want portability, why no get this great headphone for yourself at home, for blu rays and music, where you can get the mot enjoyment, and use an older headphone for portability. Just somethign to think about fello. Really, at the price it`s being soif not 70 percnt off. Really, you should see the deals people have been getingthe past.. forever. this i really an incremental step up, without spending a grand or so. liek i say, for non coplaining, it could use a minoreq tweak in two places, but byond that, your ging to be hard pressed to find competition. Considering the performance potential, and all the applications and flexability, at the price point, it`s at least half price as it is.. so you can take the second half to get some nice iems which are super portable, if you like. just a thought..

cannatownThis is a link to a thread on Head Fi witch explains the process fairly well http://www.head-fi.org/t/764773/how-to-akg-k553-pro-detachable-cable-mod-and-for-k550-and-k551-lot-of-images Also, if you aren't bothered with the lack of a detachment option but just think the cable is long, you can braid the cable to any desired length. It looks fairly good. Most people don't even notice it didn't come out of the box that way. The latter option is the one i went with, but it is nice to know that if my cable would come loose, it is an easy fix.
