Been thinking for a while about upgrading from my HyperX Cloud headset to the Sennheiser HD 598s. And now these show up, and I'm wondering if I should go with these over the 598s, which are similarly priced on amazon. Anyone want to share their 2 cents to help me decide?

bryturMy very first pair of cans were the HD 598, I was lucky enough to catch the AKG k7xx that were on here recently. In my opinion the 598 can't even compare to the 553s. The 553 are closed versus the open 598. For gaming, the soundstage on the 598 are amazing. I find the sound signature of the 598 superior to my k7xx. However the fit is phenomenal on those. With sennheisers you have the clamping effect of the headband.
So relating this to the closed 553, you have more bass because it's closed and if you use it for gaming since the soundstage is restrictive you lose situational awareness like in cod or bf.
I ended up going for these because it's supposed to compliment open headphones and I like the akg sound signature. I heard they are a little neutral because the sennheisers are more colored and warm which I prefer, but for this price they're a steal. I'm planning on using these as my main beat around gaming headphones with an AntLion mic. I'm excited to see what this semi open soundstage is like too. It's a bummer that the range isn't as high as other headphones, but as long as it sounds good who cares.

KTMDThanks for the reply. That's the main reason I can't decide, is because it's open versus closed, and unfortunately I don't have a collection of headphones to know the difference. I want to get the 598s because of the better soundstage, but I also want these K553s because I also like good bass when listening to music (hearing the bass guitar and drum for example), and from what I've been told/read the 598s don't do as well with bass since they're open. Maybe I'll just get both, and sell the one I don't like, hahaha.

bryturI own two closed cans (M50 and M80) and the k7XX. Personally, I think unless you are: a) a serious basshead b) frequently listening to music where sound isolation/leakage is a concern then open cans are always superior.

generalzouYou could buy a Fidelio X1 sold now for around $200 if not under. A lot of bass... ear shaking levels of bass really. The SHP9500 also has ear shaking levels of bass, at $50 it is an incredible value. However, it is built a wee bit shoddily. I bought 3 of those. 9500 is fully open, and Fidelio is semi open. I wonder if MassDrop with bring X2.

garagetinkererI love my X1 for bass, supposedly the X2 has slightly less bass so I'm wondering if I would like it and if it's worth the upgrade.

StephenI genuinely don't know how that may work out. I bought my X1 from massdrop a couple of years ago. That was my first purchase. Recently they were on sale for 170 on Amazon. Before they were sold for $150. I would love to see Massdrop do another one, matching Amazon's previous best of $150. I'd buy a couple of them at the least. I have a toddler, and he is a destroyer of headphones.
Tyll Hertsen thought that the X2 was a definitive and positive step up from the X1. I'd also buy a X2, if it goes on drop.
edit: this one is specifically for late night movie watching and gaming. Needed a closed headphone, this at $140 was a bit of a stretch with no removable cable, but for $20 less, i'd take that wager. Although, the aforementioned toddler loves destroying cable. ;(
