Looking to use these in my studio. I've got a few pairs of Sennheiser HD280's, but looking to see if these are better for my application. I've seen people complain that they are flat response, which is exactly what you would want in studio monitoring headphones. Boosting the bass, treble, anything would provide an inaccurate account of what is happening in the studio. Would appreciate anyone's comparison of these two. Thanks!

MartyAI'd rather pay the extra money and get Shure SRH840 over these. The build quality of the SRH840 is not as durable in the long run if you use them daily 8+ Hours. I used the SRH840 daily for 2 years and they broke down and the hinges break and crack because the entire headset is made of plastic except for a very small metal part that holds the headband together. Overall, I would say the SRH840 has very nice mids and highs, the bass is tight and not boomy. I was much more impressed with the SRH840 than the AKG K553 Pro. If you really want studio monitor headphones I'd recommending checking out the SRH840, Sony MDR7506 (seems to be phasing out by MDRV6) and Sony MDRV6.

6EQUJ5I'm confused. Your review says to buy the Shure's but you said they broke down because the build quality isn't good and they are all plastic and such. So why should I buy the Shure SRH840's?

MartyABecause they sound awesome, but you shouldn't use them as normal daily headphones as I did. I put at least 6K+ hours on those headphones before they broke. I was just giving you an idea of longevity of the headphones if you use it daily. You should only use it for monitoring/mixing and have different sets for listening. My only gripe about them is that they're made of mostly plastic but if you don't use it excessively as I did then it will last a lot longer. Everything eventually wears down and breaks over time.

MartyAI find the K550 to be perfect and precise! I don't get why people complain about flat, flat makes them perfect, use an EQ after the fact to alter the sound. Or listen to the original the way the artist intended. End rant. I am not sure how much different the K553 is but I have read that they are less flat.
Update: I have the K553 now and I haven't noticed much difference between the K550 and K553 if there is anything it's subtle enough that I don't feel like it has altered my listening experience in anyway to damage the flatness.

MartyAI bought the Senal 1200 from B&H - excellent studio monitor. The K553 is equal in physical and sound quality, but to me the Senal is more like a classic studio monitor, like the KRK8400 etc.
