Kudos to Massdrop and AKG. I own quite a bit of high end gear -- Audeze X and XC, Sennheiser HD650, Beyerdynamic T1, Etymotics, Westone, etc. And ALO Studio Six, Pathos Aurium, Sugden Headmaster, etc. And have auditioned plenty of others (HD 800s, top grados, top AKG, top Denon, etc).
Just received the K553. These are stupid good for the money. Listening to them right now through my Oppo HA-2 fed by Onkyo HD app via a Furutech GT8-A lightning usb cable. Some of the most balanced, articulate and musical cans I've ever owned. These remind me of the Beyerdynamic T1s -- very even across the entire spectrum not emphasizing anything. No peaky treble or booming bass. Human voices (listening to Beck Sea Change DSD right now) are superb. The K553s handle difficult passages with ease, letting layers of information and subtleties come through. Small details presented. Very coherent top to bottom. The only problem is I am laughing out loud that I only paid $119 for these and that is interfering with my ability to hear the music.
Only gripe is cans that sound this good should have a detachable cord even though they cost less than a few DSD downloads. In fact if someone handed me these phones and asked me to guess how much they cost I would have said $500-800 from how they sound. I stand corrected...am listening to Blue Coast DSD recordings....through the oppa h2a these sound like $1000 headphones. Incredible soundstaging and air for closed back cans.
