Audio Technica ATH-M50 sound much better than the K553. Disappointed with the purchase.

Jeff369I cannot possibly see how that would be true.

RanterbachThe M50 have more of a V-shape when K553 is more flat so for him the K553 would sound more boring, so less good

RanterbachThe M50 have that strong bass, but overall the 553 has better fidelity, esp. a smoother treble.

Jeff369Just picked mine up today (finally) and my quick impressions are that these are pretty much what I expected; somewhere between my m50's and q701's. I'm probably biased because I've grown so used to the akg sound from using the q701's so much (even though I EQ them a lot), but I'm finding the k553's better than the m50's in all the comparisons I've been doing between them (testing with the Monoprice DAC/Amp, because me poor).
The k553's still seem to retain the, "pluckiness", of acoustic guitars that the q701's have, albeit in a more enclosed soundstage (can't be helped, really), as opposed to the rounder (and more enclosed) sound of the m50's. Don't listen to much stuff with large emphasis on the bass, but I'm really digging kickdrums and bass guitars on the k553's; I like kickdrums on the q701's too (sound good and tight), but bass guitars are underwhelming, and both I find overly round (and sometimes kind of farty, even) on the m50's. Bass also comes across as less, "boomy", and intrusive to me on the k553's compared to the m50's, where sometimes I feel the mids can get a little overpowered. q701 mids sound on the brassy side, k553's are /slightly/ tinny, and m50's sounds somewhat recessed; probably like the natural mids of the k553 the most. All three phones I find to be on the harsh side for the 10-12khz range (where you get, "ss", sibilance and what I assume is noise caused by breathy voices), though the m50's are probably the softest for the sibilance just because everything sounds rounder, though the recessed mids of the m50's might make the, "noise", more prominent compared to the k553's.
When it comes to portability, I think the m50's win across the board (easier to carry, smaller, hit slightly higher volumes on random devices like my n3ds), though I find the comfort of the k553's to also be excellent. When it comes to sound though, the k553's seem to be outperforming the m50's in all respects for my purposes, so I'm curious what aspects of the m50's you prefer. Again, I'm probably biased towards the akg sound just out of familiarity, and maybe that's all it is in the end. Nonetheless, I'd suggest you give yourself a chance to maybe warm up to the k553's a little, and definitely try listening to some acoustic guitar tracks if you haven't already; the q701's made me fall in love with acoustic guitars, and while the k553's don't perform to the same level as their open-backed cousins, I think they offer significantly more airiness and life to the instrument than the m50's.
