How are these when compared to the Audio-Technica ATH-M50x? I'm looking for something that I can use for editing sound at home and listening to music when I travel.

NacMacFeegleI haven't received my set yet but I have heard my buddy's M50x and I have to say that they are not terrible, they sound good but are extremely congested. All sounds are placed right on your ears and you get no sense of space. Also they are not perfectly neutral, at least to my ears. There is a bit of coloring and like any closed cans have a slightly pronounced bass, which isn't bad at all. I'm in no way a very critical listener so take my views with a grain of salt. I just couldn't get over how closed sounding the M50x were but I loved the build and portability. I'm hoping the K553 are a lot more open.

Vizard424I've not heard the m50x and am interested to hear how much more open you think these sound in comparison. I'm hoping you aren't expecting miracles on that front but comparing to the open yet not very open sounding (IMO) k7xx its not a massive difference. I found these give a "height" to music that I'm not used to. Seems like you can almost hear where certain sliding notes are being played on a stringed instruments neck vertically as well as cymbal height. Please let us know your impressions once you get them.

Vizard424Thanks for the reply! I currently have the Kingston HyperX cloud ii for gaming and a pair of Bose on-ear headphones for travel. The Bose are starting to fail in one ear, so I'm looking to replace them, but I also want to be able to use whatever I get to mix audio for a variety of projects. I like the idea of getting the best sound possible with the K553, but I also value the portability of the M50x. The M50x also might be more comfortable, and its replaceable cable system is definitely attractive. Argh! What a terrible choice!

NacMacFeegleWithout having heard the m50x and only what I've read about them these 553s would be a better fit for editing as they're more neutral and open sounding. Vizards comments about m50x sounding closed, congested and emphasized bass are mirrored by many.

NacMacFeegleIf you don't mind doing a bit of DIY and are handy with a soldering iron (or are willing to learn) there is a really useful guide on how to do a detachable cable mod for the K553s. Of course whether that would change the way the headphones sound is up for debate. And if you're not feeling confident about opening up your headphones yourself, there is a service where they do it for you.
