While I know they are "studio" headphones, is there any reason I would not be able to use them in my daily commute (on ferries/ buses/ trains)?
I'm just thinking because they are closed back, and not open like many of the other headphones on Massdrop, it may be fine to use?
Sorry for the probably silly question, I'm not much of an audiophile, and your advice is greatly appreciated.
Sincerely

Francois_GateauNot a good commuter. High impedance makes them hard to drive loudly, the cups / pads do not isolate particularly well, and the killer is that immensely long cord, along with no inline remote to control playback. These are decent for at home use, but there are better choices for commuting.

Francois_GateauIt's a bit bulky, you can't move your neck if you let them rest on your shoulders. Also, the cable is too long and not removable (you can cut it and put antother plug ... xD) Can you wear it portable? Yes, but expect no much comfort. Otherwise, those cans sound great if they put a removable cable i'll buy it for portable too...

Francois_GateauI use my pair for traveling quite a bit (primarily airplane and bus) and even used to use them walking around campus. The impedance isn't s problem I've run into even running just off of my iPhone. Volume is solid and they sound pretty balanced (a bit more trebly than from my home setup but not at all offensive).
Some people, as have mentioned here, do have problems with the isolation factor from the ear cups. This was my biggest fear when looking to purchase these back in October of last year, and I'm thinking I got lucky. For some they work great vanilla, others have to buy new pads. I don't wear glasses and have a slightly ovalesque head and have had no problems with isolation.
The cable and lack of case are my only gripes about these headphones when using them on the go. Having them fold flat is nice for sliding them in a bag, but having a case would make me feel a lot better about carrying around these headphones. The cable is very long(9 feet?) and is not removable. I use a small Velcro strap to "bunch" the cable up to get out of the way. Not ideal, but it works well.

William.-YoungSo these are good for on the go? If that's the case I might buy them as that was my only main concern.

PCtechenthusiastThere are probably better options out there, but I've had no problems with them on the go. Would recommend.

William.-YoungDear William,
Thank you very much for your detailed and informative post above, l am very happy to hear that you are pleased with the headphones, and that you are using a similar set-up to what I would be (iPhone for the majority, and a general use set of headphones).
The lack of a case is a shame, I'm the kind of person that puts everything in cases, and wraps everything else up in bubble-wrap. If I was an elderly Italian lady, I think I would be type to keep the plastic cover on my lounge suite even after years of use hahaha
I will be keeping my eye out on the drop end date with heightened interest now.
Thanks again. Francois

Rosebud41Thanks Rosebud, your reply is very helpful. I'm one of the backers of the HiFiMAN HE-350, and I purchased them not really knowing (or researching) what the terms meant.
I guess because those are opened-backed, I was looking for something pretty much solely for commuting- as the 350s will be a home/ quiet place pair.
I guess I'll keep my eye out for a better pair on MD.
Thanks again!

PreludioThanks Preludio - that isn't a bad idea, but I'm not very "handy" when it comes to those things.
I'm also a neck mover, so that may be slightly problematic.
Maybe one day we'll be able to get the portable version. . .
Thanks again for your help.

Francois_GateauThe VModa XS phones are quite good (though nothing else from that brand unless you love overwhelming exaggerated bass) as are the Onkyo ES series closed back phones, the HP50s from NAD etc. There are lots of good closed back phones with good isolation and short, sturdy cords. The VModa XS stands out due to its small size, tough modular build, excellent carrying case, and surprisingly well balanced sound. Slightly more than this price point and not on MassDrop, but those would be a great commuter and for not too much more. Happy hunting!

Rosebud41These are 32 ohm headphones, which is exactly the opposite of high impedance. Ergo, while you may like to use an amp for color, improvements in driving are marginal. These run fine off an mp3 player or iPhone.

Etaoin_PigI corrected that impedance opinion in a later comment. Isolation, cord length, and lack of inline controls are still an issue for mobile use. The cord is roughly 10 feet long! There are much better options for portable use than these. I've seen people use Grado SR60s as portable cans, and while possible, such usage is certainly not optimal.

Rosebud41Fair enough. Isolation with different earpads is pretty good, but I've got to agree with you on the controls. I'm fine with the cable length--it rolls--so overall size and weight is probably a bigger factor in my estimation.

Etaoin_PigI own these headphones also, I wouldn't dream of walking while using these. Maybe at a table with a laptop, but never walking.
