Actually, mine don't sound great as I initially reported. When playing a track with more isolated bass, I noticed something strange, and when I hooked up a speaker test, the right-side driver has extremely prominent rattling starting at ~75Hz and below. This is so crappy. I guess I'll look through the warranty form. This is the second defective product I've received from Massdrop. Probably just a coincidence.

NyenI'm not exactly sure how to determine that. I am using speaker-test on Linux and depending on volume, the right channel rattle starts between 65 and 75 Hz and continues all the way down to 15Hz. There is a very repeatable point on the volume knob at which the 75Hz rattle kicks in, though if I wiggle the right side of the headphones I can cause the rattle to occur at lower volumes. The left channel sounds smooth across the whole range. Any tips for further characterization? Is there even a point? I'm relatively new to high-end headphones, coming from Grado SR80s.

rmullHey Rmull,
Thanks for your post! Just tested the two units we have in the office from 20hz up to 100hz and I didn't hear any rattle.

Feel free to post or shoot me an email (will@massdrop.com) if you have any other questions or feedback.

WillLike Rmull,
I ran a frequency test and I am getting a buzz/crackle/(electrical short sounding noise) in the upper mids, probably in the 1.4k range in only the left ear cup. Sent in a support email, just wanted to make sure you guys got it.

WillJust wanted to let you know my headphones sound great and don't have any rattle. Figured Id say something so you know it isnt the majority that has this issue. Thank you and everyone else at Massdrop for making this drop happen.

rmullcan you hear the rattle while using onboard sound? would you be able to check that for me? as I don't have an amp/dac yet and would like to know if its a problem that can be heard with onboard. ty

tommydadogI don't see why it would matter, unless your onboard DAC was unable to reproduce the proper frequencies that caused it to resonate or something. I would think that any rattling at all would be indicative of a physical flaw in the device, regardless of what source is being fed to them. There shouldn't be an audio signal that will cause the device to rattle if it is working properly.
Unless I am misunderstanding what you people mean by "rattling" anyway...

WillHey Will
I purchased and received two pairs of these. Thanks to rmull, I went and tested both of mine. Unfortunately, I found rattling in both of my headphones. One has rattling on the right can and the other one on the left. Like rmull explained, it happens under 80Hz to 15Hz. There is a point in volume knob, about 50% when the rattling starts. It is quite noticeable. Do you guys arrange repairs at this point?

dudUKIMHmm... this is concerning. :\ How noticeable is the rattling in normal use? (Music/gaming/movies) Do they only have the rattle when you are doing the specific frequency test?
How do they fair without an amp? With Just soundcard/new onboard sound amps?

dudUKIMHey dudUKIM,
Thanks for the post! Please email support@massdrop.com and feel free to CC me, will@massdrop.com.
None of ~10 units we tested in our office experienced any rattling and I'd like to do some trouble shooting if you have a few minutes.
Hope to hear from you soon,

tommydadogIn my case I am using a DAC and amp. The rattle occurs at higher volumes. I don't have onboard sound and if I hooked it up to my phone or something there might not be enough drive strength to get to the rattle point. I'm away for the holiday so I can't run any more tests for another week or so, apologies.

rmullMine has a problem too. I'm not sure if it's rattling but it sounds like a newspaper being crumbled or the sound windows makes when you empty the trash can.
I know it's not my setup since I connect my AKG K550 to the same port, there's no such 'hiss'...
Is this what you guys are experiencing?
EDIT: It happens every time when the bass kicks in. I'm currently listening to this song: Sam Smith - I'm not the only one (FLAC)
Looks like I'll have to issue an RMA...

tommydadogLike rmull said, it occures at higher volumes, but not that high. It starts happening on mine even if I have them plugged straight into my Nexas 5 at about 70% volume. It becomes more prominent if you go louder. I also noticed that if I tilt my head in the direction of the bad driver it almost goes away.
