Hey Everyone,
Here's AKG's official statement on the rattling units:
We have concluded our independent research into the issues reported by a small number of K7XX owners and have determined that some units may not conform to our industry-leading quality standards. We have learned that the low frequency rumble produced by some units is the result of a noncompliant voice coil that inadvertently made it through our rigorous quality control procedures. We deeply regret any inconvenience this has caused and are acting as quickly as we can to rectify the situation for you.
If you own one of the noncompliant units, Massdrop will post return instructions for you and we will make every effort to repair and return your unit at our U.S. repair facility. Our promise to you is that once we receive your unit we will make every effort to repair and test your headphones as quickly as we can and get your original unit and serial number back to you so you can go back to enjoying your audiophile-quality sound. We appreciate your patience and we know you will love your K7XX headphones!
Eric Boyer VP, Worldwide Sales, AKG Acoustics
Repair process instructions have been posted previously but here they are again for anyone who missed my last post:
Domestic orders: A) We have been assigned a specific AKG representative, Hector Hernandez, from the AKG USA California office who will handle all issues related to K7xx headphones. Contact him by emailing your request to service.us@akg.com with a full description of the problem.
B) Hector will review the service request and will follow AKG service procedures to evaluate and correct any manufacturing defects. Units that are deemed defective will be repaired, not replaced. If drivers need to be replaced, they will be swapped for another matched pair.
International Orders: A) AKG is not providing international service (we weren't supposed to sell internationally in the first place). If you are an international customer, you will need to contact Massdrop Customer Support via your transactions page and arrange to have your unit shipped to our offices in San Francisco. We’ll then coordinate the RMA procedure with AKG USA, and when the unit is repaired and returned to us, we’ll ship it back to you at your international destination.
B) Hector will review the service request that Massdrop submits on your behalf and will follow AKG service procedures to evaluate and correct any manufacturing defects. Units that are deemed defective will be repaired, not replaced. If drivers need to be replaced, they will be swapped for another matched pair.
Thanks for everyone's understanding and continuing support of this drop and our collaboration with AKG : )

Willwill the units in this drop be retested for quality assurance? i would feel a lot better about having put down $200 if this would be the case...

WillDisappointed in this. I chose AKG over other brands because of their unique sound and quality assurance but now I'm a little bit skeptical since the number of defective units is unknown. There must be a control variable where we replicate the issue so that we'll know if we have defects. Will this issue only arise if there is an amp? Does this affect just the first drop or all batches?

RiskyControl variable? simple just play them at the highest volume you would ever listen to them at but don't go maxing out your amp with these on it. Doing a frequency sweep in the low range will show if it rattles, its a rather distinctive sound and you will most likely notice it, if you don't notice it then it shouldn't matter then should it? Cranking them up till the drivers starting to collapse is over driving them and I don't think anyone listens to music that loud.
Also every company will sell lemons every now and then, its rather impossible to not make lemons :p
edit* the rattle can happen without an amp and seems it may affect all 3 batches.
SilenceofthesamzHi Silenceofthesamz,
Unfortunately these were produced before any reports of rattling reached us and they were shipped before AKG acknowledged the rattling as a problem.
To cover people in this drop, we're keeping 50 units at our warehouse so people who receive defective headphones can make a quick swap with us rather than wait for a repair.
It's not a perfect solution unfortunately but we're working hard to keep the drop running smoothly.
Thanks for your support and question!

WillHey Will,
We're entering the 2nd week of February. Many of us 1st droppers were expecting some more concrete info about when we'd be strapping this cans to our heads and melting our eardrums. Last we heard, they were on the boat in the harbor, and potentially going to be delayed by some dock strikers. Anything new since then?
