So these kinds of AKG headphones are known to require some driving, but this particular model is also known as a great deal as a headphone on it's own right. For a budget of $200, do you guys think that these are still a good buy, which doesn't leave any room for an headphone AMP purchase for someone who only has a SupremeFX Impact audio card included in an Asus Impact iv motherboard? It's an audio card separate from the motherboard itself.

JohnLeI'm running mine off the same thing but on my Hero VII board, it can power them fine but if you want better audio quality then you should save up for a amp and dac. The on board will get you going for now :)

JohnLeI have not received them yet but I have run the K712 Pro off my phone (Nubia Z7 Max) with no problems. I believe that they have the same drivers.

JohnLeIt has the same drivers as K702 65th aniv that is $400 price range. IMO this is a good deal. Save up to buy dac/amp, this phone can be much more better depend on your dac/amp.

travelinjackAre you sure your phone is properly driving them? I have a friend who uses his dt880s 250 ohms on his phone as well and thought it was fine, until I got him to get a proper amp and it changed his world.

JohnLeI am not saying that the sound might not be improved upon but it was nothing like trying to drive the HD600 and HD650. I have amp/DAC at home and office that I will use with the K7xx but the sound with the K712 Pro was fine with my phone. I will do an A/B comparison once I have the 7xx in hand on Sunday. Maybe my phone has a better amp than most phones? It has this chip: "As an audio device for mobile applications, the AK4961 achieves industry leading level performance of THD+N (-99dB) and 110dB dynamic range with the newly developed 32-bit advanced audio DAC and cap-less class G headphone amplifier."

travelinjackThat's interesting, I wonder what amp/dac is inside my Nexus 6. I'm planning on purchasing tomorrow evening as I'm still allocating funds for the month, but I won't be able to afford an amp/dac purhcase on top of this anytime soon. I was looking into the FiiO E17K for it's unique variety of features, and the fact it just released last month so it's the latest product offered, especially at a very affordable price for it's talents. I noticed it's using some interesting amp/dac specs from Ti.

JohnLeI have the old FiiO E7 and old FiiO E10. I am getting the Monoprice desktop headphone amp at the same time as the K7xx. The FiiO both have Wolfson but the Monoprice has a TI/Burr Brown DAC. I am curious to see how they compare. I am trying to decide whether to get the Audio-GD or the SMSL stack before I move out of China at the end of the year.I plan to get the Hifiman HE-400i before I leave also.

travelinjackReliability has been a issue with my SMSL products (few years back), but the Audio-GD NFB-15 or NFB-11 is a great long term investment.

TacoboyGood to know. The upside of SMSL is 110 to 220V while the Audio-GD you have to choose either dedicated 110V or 220V. At some point I will repatriate to the States.
