How does these stack up against m50x? How's the bass, mids and high compared to the m50x's? What's the difference in sound? How much better do they sound?

vilius572It's much better than m50x. It's open back, so it soundstage is much bigger. Base is tighter and not boomy. Both are bright headphones, but to me m50x sound very sibilant and k7xx doesn't. This one has much bigger and comfortable ear cups whereas my m50x rests on my ear and becomes really sweaty & painful after an hour or so. This one needs a proper amp, while m50x doesn't need one. M50x is handy if you carry it around a lot. Simply put k7xx simply outclasses m50x by a huge margin in sound and comfort.

vilius572Depends on the kind of music you listen to, amongst other things.
The biggest difference is that the ATH M series are closed back headphones, these are open-backed. What that means is that with the AKG, sound will leak out because it's kinda like having two small speakers on your head, not inside a sealed enclosure (like the M50X). While this might sound like a bad thing, this is actually good for the music. Sound reproduction is much more realistic because the sound waves don't bounce off of the solid case backing and move "naturally".
However what this also means is that compared to closed back headphones open backed headphones will be lacking in bass (typically). That said, amongst open backed headphones the K7XX is actually really good. Mids and highs, they'll blow the M50X out of the water, if natural sound is what you're after.
So my recommendation is that if you mostly listen to dubstep, hip-hop, mmmm. I'm sorry my knowledge of genres of music which require a thumping bass is very lacking, but if you mainly listen to that kind of music then I'd recommend a closed-back headphone. But if you listen to a lot of different genres, especially music with a lot of detail and resolution, eg with many instruments scattered in space (think classical music, complex metal compositions etc), then the AKG (or pretty much any open-backed headphone) will beat the M50X. AKG imho is much more versatile as well. The bass might be lacking in *quantity* for bass heads, but it's natural and good quality bass. I'm sorry I'm not good at explaining musical experiences.
I've had the K7XX since its first run (serial number in the 100s) and am very happy with them for the performance they provide for the price I paid. I used to own the M40 (non-X) before that but have listened to the M50X a lot too.

payodpandaI see. Thank you for sharing information with me. I listen to all kind of music like rock, dubstep, hip hop, edm and pop. I'm looking after natural sounding headphones but also want them to have some bass so they are not completely flat. By bass I mean something similar to m50x, definitely not looking for amount of bass beats has :D Any recommendations?

vilius572To echo what trybeingarun and payodpanda have stated, and judging by the music you like, I think you'll be happy with the K7XX. I wouldn't call them "bass monsters" but, to my ears, they have a really sweet low-end. I have a set as well as two sets of ATH-M50s (one original, one X series) and I like them all but they are different tools for different uses. The K7XX are a "pleasure listening" set of cans whereas the M50s are monitors. Meaning that while the K7XX are meant to make your music sound its best, the M50s are designed to be as flat in their frequency response as they can be in order to give a listener an accurate representation of the sound for mixing/mastering, warts and all. Warm and musical vs. cool and clinical, apples and oranges, as it were.
You might also consider the Sennheiser HD 650; Massdrop occasionally offers their own version called the HD 6XX which is pretty close to a dead ringer to the original 650. To my ears it's a fairly tight race between those and the K7XX, just depends on which sound signature appeals to you more.
And yeah, regarding Beats headphones, they tend to be very exaggerated in the bass realm and it's also flabby and uncontrolled. Stay away from Beats, they're garbage.

JTrubsThank you for answer. It's really hard to decide whether I should buy K7XX or HD 6XX, you confused me :D By the way I do have DAC for headphones. It's a Optoma Nuforce uDAC 3 which is definitely not the best one out there but it's way better than built in audio card in my motherboard. DAC is useless at the moment because M50x's do not need one but I think it will come in handy with new headphones. Now it's only left to choose what headphones to buy.

vilius572Apologies, as it wasn't my intention to confuse you. :-) I don't think you could go wrong with either set of headphones. There's a good review and thread over at Head-Fi that compares the two. > http://www.head-fi.org/t/755497/sennheiser-hd650-vs-akg-k7xx I mostly agree with the main review but there's some things I don't entirely see eye-to-eye on. Then again, sound is subjective and everyone hears things differently.
Rated for 80mW at 16 ohms, Nuforce's assertion that the uDAC-3 is suitable for driving headphones with impedances up to 300 ohms is a little, ahem..., ambitious to say the least. Sure, it will push sound out of a high-impedance set of cans but it won't really get the most out of them. I had a uDAC-2 several years ago and normally wouldn't try to drive anything tougher than my ATH-M50s; your M50Xs would certainly benefit from the uDAC. It's my feeling that you will be able to use the uDAC-3 with the AKG or Senns but it will be a little power-shy for either.
Sorry if I created any more confusion! Cheers!

JTrubsI read that review few minutes ago and I also found a good review on youtube and I'm leaning towards HD 6XXs. I do use my uDAC-3 with M50Xs at the moment and I do notice a difference in sound, however amp is not really needed for M50Xs in my opinion. If I end up with HD 6XXs, I will eventually get a better amp, but uDAC-3 will do it for some time.
Thank you very much for helping me pick new headphones, I appreciate it!

vilius572Please keep in mind that while the Sennheiser HD 650 are always available via regular retailers, the HD 6XX are only available through Massdrop. With that said, the 6XX haven't been offered since last year and there's no telling when, or if, Massdrop will offer them again. Cheers!

JTrubsI'm aware of that :) I really hope they will do a drop on HD 6XXs some time soon. I would definitely get HD 650s but they personally seem to not be worth it for the price ($330-ish in my country) compared to 6XXs $199. I found slightly used HD 700s for $300, not sure if that's a good buy or not.
