Can anyone tell me if I need a headphone amplifier to get better sound quality. Just received these in the mail and to tell you the truth my daughters $40 Sony headphones sound way better. Please help . Feeling cheated

Nicanor64Yes. Everywhere I read up on these cans people have said you will want a decent amp to drive them. Apparently you'll hear a clear difference with/without an amp. My pair will likely be arriving next week along with the Jotunheim amp from Schiit Audio I ordered. I also recommend running them for a few hours straight to burn them in. Also, if this is your first open-back pair of headphones, you may not be used to its sound profile or you might just prefer a more closed, bassy type of headphones. Definitely give them a chance though.

Nicanor64You need a good amp and it needs a lot of burn in time. I remember mine being excessively harsh at the beginning (esp. unamped/poorly amped); now it sounds phenomenal.

Nicanor64Yes, these take a fair amount of power to drive them. I wouldn't try to use them without an amp. I am using the Fiio portable amp E11K ($59 retail) with them and it does the job.
