MrKatinasIf you are looking for crystal clear details and great mids, then get the HD6XX but if you want easy to listen to headphones get the K7XX. HD6XX would be my recommendation because they are the same price and more detailed (you can hear every pluck of the guitar) and have great mids in my opinion. They are slightly bright (high treble) on some (sabre based) dac/amps but that is easily fixed with a new dac/amp combo. The HD6XX's do have one heck of a head clamp but that can be fixed by stretching them out and over time it gets better. The ear cups in the HD6XX are also smaller than the K7XX. The K7XX has awesome instrument separation and massive room feel while the HD6XX's sound somewhat closed in and not as separated. So really it comes down to what you are looking for and how much each is. If the HD6XX's are on sale for 200 I would buy them, but if not, get the K7XX's and you wont be disappointed. I'm not saying the K7XX's are bad, they are just different... I have both and like each one just in different ways for different music.

jhumm22You say that the Sabre based DACs are slightly bright in the treble area. That is maybe why the Dragonfly Red is a good match to the HD6xx either in DAC mode or standalone as a DAC/amp. This compensate for the Sennheiser’s slightly recessed highs. If I compare to my other source, an Onkyo network Receiver with an AKM AK4458 velvet DAC, using the same O2 amp with my HD600 or 6xx, I feel that the treble is maybe slightly hotter with the DFR than with the AKM based source. Not that one is worst than the other, just a slight difference.

jhumm22Very strange comparison, from mine, and many others' experience, in regard to HD6-- series being detailed (soundwise) relative to the K7-- series. If AKG K7-- are known for anything, it is that they are commonly regarded as the "detail monsters", much more than HD6-- series. The remark about the instrument separation and soundstage on K7-- is, otherwise, spot on, since the HD6-- do sound more closed (again, in comparison), although it has been correctly observed by others that HD6-- soundstage has better depth, whereas K7-- soundstage is wide and around the head (almost detached) . They are indeed different, and neither is bad, I could comfortably live with both. But - with more challenging music, faster, with rapid blends of the instruments, the technical competence of the K7-- series undeniably comes through. In general (I had both cans for a good period of time, and compared them extensively) - to my ears - the music felt always more fun, more alive and more exciting with K7-- . Being it jazz, classic, or (specially) fast paced (or not) EDM.
