BlinkeyI have the same trouble, deciding between x2 and k7xx. I think it depends on the sound signature mostly. I have not heard either, though according to the charts at innerfidelity x2 has a bass boost and k7xx is more neutral. I am going to buy the k7xx first, I have an amp already and the k7xx is cheaper and harder to get. If I don't like it, then I will sell it and try the x2.

SeT9I own the 7XX and i love them. very close to the 712. but the x2 is the best. If you can affort the Fidellio X2 got with it...musically is better. the x2 is the best headphone under $500 or even more no need to buy any expensive amp for it.

SeT9I have the X2 and K712 (a more expensive K7XX basically). The X2 is mildly v-shaped while the K7XX is more neutral. The K7XX has a wider soundstage, measures better (lower distortion), and is more detailed in complex music, so overall I'd say it's better. But the X2 is still great if you don't have an amp, and the build quality is superb.

SeT9You can get X2 sound at cheaper levels. They are nice, with good build quality, but not $300 nice considering the elevated bass response. At that price point, I would think that someone would rather be looking for accuracy and linearity versus a "whump" in the bottom end, which can be had for a lot less. (AKG's Y50 is a very good example of such things. Hell, if you want to really have fun with a pair of headphones on the lower registers, go grab a pair of Skullcandy Crushers with their adjustable subwoofer setup. I think that they are a riot.) However, at $300+, you should start expecting a bit more in terms of accuracy in your headphone music reproduction. To find it at the level that the 7xx does at the $199 price point is pretty remarkable actually.
The 7xx is quite a neutral sounding headphone (like most of the AKG line) and has very good linearity across the entire frequency range. Comfort and build quality are excellent. Blows my mind how good they are every time I put them on.
IMO, the MD/AKG K7XX is one of the best "bang for the buck" audio products of all time. I'd put them right up there with classics like the Sony SCD 1, Dunlavy Audio Labs SC-IV's, as well as new schoolers such as SVS SB-2000's, Schiit Magni Uber, Oppo BDP 105D, etc.

Blinkey100% no quality issues? There can be quality issues with any sort of product, the X2 isn't magically safe from that. Case in point:

It's just that people on this thread are more vocal about the issues they have with their cans as this is THE discussion thread for them, and Massdrop is where you get these from anyway.

BlinkeyUhh, I guess they are... along with whatever task you put them to.
The AKG K7XX's are fairly well detailed and have a wide soundstage, but in my experience most anime aren't particularly well known for their sound engineering. Some can be. That being said, they are very, very comfortable, which makes for a pleasant experience for anime binges since you'll likely forget these are on your head after a while.
I use these mostly with my PC at home, and that isn't just limited to anime and OST's -- playing games, talking on voice chat, watching videos or livestreams, editing on audacity... These just work, and they do it really well.
Regarding the X2, I've had experience with it before but decided that it wasn't worth the extra $100 I'd have to shell out to have them. However, from what I'm hearing they're being highly marked down in European countries, as I have a friend from Germany who at first wanted to get the K7XX's (due to my recommendation and the look/comfort) but ended up getting the X2 instead as it was easier to purchase and the warranty would not be a hassle to deal with if there were any issues. She got that for the equivalent of around $220, VAT included, if I recall correctly.
If you can get the X2's for about that price, the choice between the two is largely up to preference. As many others before me have said, the K7XX is a very neutral sounding headphone, while the X2 has a more 'fun' sound with its slightly heavier bass and recessed mids. That being said, much as I loved the X2, I guess my opinions lie the same with VonBrew -- it is a sound signature that can easily be found for less, or you can even EQ the K7XX with EqualizerAPO or the like to sound very very similar to the X2's, or whatever sound you prefer.
To conclude with a final somewhat non sequitur... If you are an anime fan, the AKG K7 series is most likely known for being "Mio's Headphones", Mio being the Mio Akiyama from the rather famous moe comedy slice-of-life series K-on! Since that "product placement", the AKG K7 series and its derivatives (such as the Q701) have largely been popular on pixiv and other illustration sites due to their distinctive look and association with said anime grill -- and you can see the pair on other headphone girls too.
Regardless of what you choose, you will probably be happy with either of them as they are great headphones. The K7XX may include a slightly longer wait (as these are in stock at Massdrop's warehouse), and as I'm aware the most recent batches of headphones will probably not suffer from any quality defects, as mine are just perfect -- I'm listening to one of my friends streaming Neptunia V on his PS3 right now with them.
