I just graphed out the Quincy Jones 702 and the K712 and if I understand correctly, the K7xx falls somewhere between the two which makes it a good thing. That makes the K7xx slightly closer to the K712 in bass, about perhaps 3dB closer than the Quincy Jones and the mids through highs maybe 1dB apart from the K712 if that. Not bad at all! Comparing those to my HD518s there's no contest, they slam the 518s. I was looking at the K712 again as I was set on purchasing them and I am glad Massdrop is doing the K7xx again because I question what I would have paid an extra $200 for. Both cans are plastic and I think have the same ear pads (I could be mistaken) and definitely the same headband system. I'm not sure of the drivers are the same though, but I don't know. I have seen a "cage break test" on you tube claiming no break on the K701s, but big breakage on the K7xx at the same frequency. However, I'm not buying it because I don't know if the test was skewed in some way and I think perhaps it was. I have read about something going on with the left side, but it's not the driver, but the mount. However, I also read that it is not common and those units have been exchanged. So, I figure why spend an extra $200 for a similar set of cans and in the same cheap packaging? My $70 Takstar (also Chinese) closed backs came in far better packaging than even AKG's top of the line cans. The only glaring difference to me is between Slovakia and China and that's just the tag, still the same plastic and everything else.
