Hey Everyone,
Got some great news from AKG today. Rather than the 580 units we expected to receive, 1000 are on a truck to our warehouse right now! Given that, we're increasing the cap on this drop by 420 units up to 1000 pcs total.
Thanks for your support and interest in this drop, let me know if you have any questions.

WillWell to avoid QC issues I'd like to request getting one that was manufactured at the latest date just in case various changes were made over the course from the first drop to now I could care less what # is on the inside of the band since it isn't the First Edition.
I know that probably isn't possible as you just pick one up package it away then ship it off but just thought I'd throw that out there and I guess the drop won't end early then :( and since you have a good bit more coming you might extend the drop possibly?
I hope not as I don't want to have to wait to long, maybe hold the leftovers for yet another drop of the K7XX?

WillHmm, before it said that those 580 units were in stock at Massdrop and will be shipped as soon as the drop ends...

WillWill, I have a question. What happened to the 580 that were in stock in the Massdrop warehouse? Also, now that 1000 units are on a truck, does that mean you'll have 1,580 in stock once that shipment arrives?

WillAh, there we are. This is the biggest drop on these ever. Now I hope these 1000 pcs don't have issues. I also thought that 580 were already in the warehouse? At any rate, it may be a while before this drop ends. I wish I had known because I jumped in as quickly as I could after seeing previous drops on these end in as little as a couple of hours. Oh well, I don't care when I get my pair, just as long as I get them and hopefully they are without problems as I do not trust AKG where service is concerned.

WillHey Will,
With the frequent interaction Massdrop has had with AKG, I was wondering if you believe ordering a batch of custom color K7XX headphones for a drop is even a plausible request that the manufacturer would be willing to fulfill.
Thanks

WillWill,
This drop was limited to 580. Raising the cap feels dishonest. This is an ethical mistake. Your audiophile community recognized the value in this great exclusive product and it sold out sooner than you expected. We all thought we needed to get in quick as we watched the units sold jump up. Now that you've increased the cap you damage the exclusivity which you sold to us from the start. You have diluted the value of this drop and decreased my enjoyment of buying in. It shows your inexperience in business. Please stop this drop and honor your community. I personally do not have a problem with you dropping the rest of the shipment at a later date. I enjoy this site and look forward to future drops. I am glad that more of my Massdrop brothers will be able to get in on this drop.
Warm regards.

LazulitoneI really don't think there is anything exclusive about these. This isn't the first drop. So it's not like there are only 1000 of these out there. They have done this drop a few times. I got mine in January and I don't believe that was the first time these were dropped either. It seems like they do 1000 or so every time they drop. The only way I consider these to be "limited" is that you can only get them every few months when they drop and not just any day of the week. Nothing exclusive.

LazulitoneI have to agree with MrRooks. These headphones have dropped twice(?) before in large numbers.
It is regrettable that you must derive enjoyment from and place special value upon the concept of other people not being able to share in the same experience as you.

LazulitoneAn additional 420 wouldn't make much of a difference anyway as Massdrop have sold and gave out approximately 8000 units of these headphones already.

LazulitoneSure it may be considered being dishonest, but it has not been the first time they've increased the limits of a drop. I do agree with others about completing the initial drop limit, then have a new one so it has a new count down for people on the fence.
Apparently they were supposed to only be around 6-7k run of these, based on demand they most likely upped the order with AKG, from a business perspective they would be stupid not to. In regards to them being limited, they still are since you can't purchase these at any other retailers.

LazulitoneIt's not the upping is the limit that people are upset by. People are upset that original said.... 580 units ready to ship. We achieved 580, then they said ok well the drop was bigger so we are ordering more. Order away, but I think the first 580 got in so fast in hopes to get these in before the nov ship date they now have.

LazulitoneHey Lazulitone,
Fact of the matter is, we were told there would be 580 units in the incoming shipment, but we were later informed 1000 would be in the shipment instead. In the course of global import/export, it's pretty common, even for public companies like Harman, to get a couple hundred units more or less (thank god it's more this time) than expected.
As an example, if you want to buy and import Phillips headphones, you have to purchase a 40ft container for a specific price. They don't tell you what's in the container, they don't know. One branch of the company packs the containers, another sells them, and they don't need to tell buyers what's inside because there's enough margin and they're selling to places like Target who can move pretty much anything under $500/unit. While it makes them nearly impossible to work with, you have to respect the apathy with which they're able to sell products.
I appreciate that you feel strongly about the exclusivity of our drops, but let's be clear, I didn't spend months negotiating, designing, and pitching this product so a small group of Audiophiles could enjoy it. I worked with AKG to make this product so more people could be introduced to the world of Audiophile sound and appreciate the hobby so many of us love. The more people who can have one of these the better, so when AKG called me and said "we've got 420 more than expected", you bet I increased the maximum drop quantity.
It's called "Limited Edition" because we have to call it that. By and large, exclusivity on consumer products is a concept made up by manufacturers to add perceived value to products that don't have enough real value to justify their price. Buy mass produced products because they're good, not because you think you're missing out otherwise, or you think they'll put you in an exclusive club (a hard thing to type for someone with a wall of Jordan retros).
Warm regards,

WillI have no problem waiting a day extra for others to join, but now its effecting the ship date even though their are already on the way to your place which doesnt make any sense. Its wrong for everyone that has ordered. the first increase, to my knowledge, didn't effect the shipping date and i was ok with that but now whats the point in having a ending date and time if your just going to keep extending it or increasing stock. Plus i still havent received a verification email or herd back from tech support.

WillI wholeheartedly despise the fact that the AKG K7xx are made in China. I am well aware of warehouses in China that use low-quality, cheaper alternatives (material) to massively manufacture inventory. This is coming from an individual that is of Chinese-descent.

WillHi Will, Corporations like Harman don't care what happens after production and they don't care about QC either. It truly is a caveat emptor world. That said though, often times we do get lucky. I've heard very little (rattle issue only which I understand is resolved) negative about these cans and much more positive. In regards to calling them "audiophile" cans, that is also nothing but a marketing term. I think that the manufacture's false perceived value addition by adding phrases like "limited edition" is part of the problem and unfortunately they all get away with it. Personally, I interpreted "limited edition" to mean available exclusively through Massdrop, which is true and nothing wrong there. Do I think these cans are worth the MSRP? Not even close. Do I think they are worth $200? If they sound like many describe, then yes. Not everything from China is crap. I've seen modern factories there and they can produce pretty good stuff when told to do so. In fact, some of your "high-end" audio gear with the four digit price tags is actually made in China. At the end of the day, if one is happy with their purchase, that is the bottom line. If these sound very near the K712, I'll be happy indeed because I'm not a headphone guy, but needed a pair and will have saved $200. I'll take that all day.
