Trying to find more info on amp pairing, which I am sure is in here, instead it is pages and pages of arguments, bickering, defenses, and offenses, sounds like a mix between a debate, a town hall, and a courtroom session
Back to what the discussion should be about: Has anyone paired these with the O2 that is currently available on here? I was thinking of running the O2 using my Behringer UC202 DAC and am hoping that the combo will give me good clarity and range

Ice_Pyrosheeet, this is exactly what i've been wondering and trying to find info on. I didn't want to spend on a DAC since i too have the UC202, and was wondering if i should get either the O2 amp or a Schiit. I'm leaning towards the O2 because I went through all the info newavguy posted about his design and i really like how detailed each explanation is. Everything is justified and makes sense.
Another option (for more money) is the audio gd nfb15, which will probably solve any potential amp/dac issues for newer headphones that i may have for eternity

Ice_Pyroo2 is bad idea for AKG headphones like K701, K702, Q701 and probably K7xx. Better to look for some Tube AMP like Schiit LYR 2.

jayrcSame. I've asked this the same day these dropped. Was wondering if tube or solid state for these. Figured tube would be be better for these for whatever reason I've read on other forums.

DamixYou cannot just throw out "o2 is bad idea for AKG headphones like K701, K702, Q701 and probably K7xx" without giving a reason.. Why do you say that?
I will mainly be using the K7XX for CSGO/gaming, watching media and streaming. Currently using onboard only.
Also looking at the O2 with/without ODAC OR the Creative Sound Blaster X7 that is currently dropped. https://www.massdrop.com/buy/creative-sound-blaster-x7-amp-dac-combo

Ice_PyroI'm an admitted noob, but from what I've read the O2 pairs nicely with the k7xx at the 1x gain setting. Unfortunately the O2 offerred here only has 3.5x and 6.5x. You'd have to buy elsewhere for the 1x gain. I've also heard good things about the Vali with the k7xx, but it seems to me that the O2 is more versatile.

BryanUDI have taken soldering lessons about 11 years ago and do not practice it.
Would I be able to easily head down to the nearest Soldering Service joint and have them change the resistor for the gain? I am a newb myself and have never bought a soundcard or a amp/dac before :/

Ice_PyroFor cheaper solutions, look at the Schiit Vali paired with a decent DAC (Schiit Modi?). I've heard from many that these headphones benefit greatly from tube amps as they, by defualt, have a bit of a treble-y sound. The analog signal from the tube amp should help mellow out the frequency response.
With that said, if you're going to use these for audio production/sound engineering/mixing & mastering, you may want to look into a solid state amplifier such as the Schiit Magni; this will give you a more analytical response from the headphones as the signal will be largely unaffected (except by your headphones, of course). Another reason for going solid state with these cans would be if you simply prefer more treble, as some do.
Personally, even though I will be using these headphones for studio use, I am still opting for the tube amp as I enjoy a warmer sound and I have another pair of headphones as well as monitor speakers to reference with. It's really what best fits your needs and wants. I hope this helps.

DamixWhy make stupid, baseless comments? It just clutters the thread and confuses people.

Testbrah"You cannot just throw out "o2 is bad idea for AKG headphones like K701, K702, Q701 and probably K7xx" without giving a reason.. Why do you say that?" Because K701, Q701, K702 (K7xx less for sure) are bass light with brith music presentation . o2 AMP sound flat, and dry for me. K7xx will be better with more warm sounding DAC/AMP .

DamixQ701 and especially K7xx aren't bass light unless you're a basshead. The latter has a strongly accentuated bass response. I take it "brith" = some messed up spelling of the six letter word "bright?" The K7xx is a warm sounding headphone already, not everyone will want to make it warmer.

RhamnetinSennheisers (518, 558, 598) are warmer due to a cliff drop around 9 to 10 Khz. The K7xx won't have that. Should sound a bit more balanced. Just my take on it based on the graphs for the 64 Annies and K712pro which the K7xx is designed after. I'm not an expert.

RhamnetinYep, sorry, Swiftkey mess up something. Q701, K702 sound bass light comapred to DT990, DT880, especially Fidelio X1, X2 and ATH-R70x. I don't even try to compare Q701 to bass heavy headphones like ATH-M50x.

BryanUDThe Standalone O2 here has a 2.5 and 6.5x gains, not 3.5
If you get the O2 + Dac combo they are trying to get confirmation on selectable gain settings, so you would have the choice of 1x/2.5x, 1x/3.5x, and standard 2.5x/6.5x
Can anyone else shed more light on the O2 gain settings as it pertains to pairing with the K7XX's?
Also, How would the k7xx pair with a budget tube amp such as the Bravo V2/V3?

Ice_PyroIf in the end we cannot select the gain, I'll mod mine to have 1x and 2.5x, that should be enough. Cannot confirm, but it should really be enough. And sorry, can't help you with the Bravo's

Ice_PyroJust bought a Vali to replace/augment my O2. I like the warmer sound it gives, but you really need true "audiophile" cans to enjoy the Vali. Plugged into my HD201s (laugh, but for $20 bucks they're remarkably flat,) they're clearly overpowered. Should sound great on the AKGs.
Syrne -- do you also have a turntable? I'm looking for some feedback on pairing Schitt's Phono preamps with the Vali -- running a Cambridge 551P now.

Ice_PyroI got a K7XX connected to an O2 + Odac revB. I have the 2.5/6.5 version. On 2.5x, with the Odac set to 90% in Windows, and the O2 vol pot at 50% I get very loud, near my comfort threshold, with 50% more volume to go. Useful for low level or full dynamic range sources.
And yes, Odac + O2 sounds awesome, compared to sound cards, smartphones etc
