I REALLY wanted to get a pair of the Massdrop AKG K7XX's this drop but living in a small studio apartment with my partner makes an open-back headphone not a viable option.. I am often up late at night listening to music and gaming so having an open headphone that sounds like I'm using speakers at 3am isn't going to work for me. From all my review hunting and from talking to some self proclaimed "audiophiles" and "audio-enthusiasts" here at Massdrop and around other forums around the net, I think I've found the best possible closed-back headphone alternative. The AKG K553 Pro's are known to have a lush, full bodied, massive and immersive soundstage without sacrificing that noise isolation and full reaching bass of a closed-back. I've seen several reviews calling this headphone the first "open closed-back" because of how similar it sounds to an open headphone without compromising on sound quality. I really hope that Massdrop will reactivate them to so those of us who can't go with open-backs can have a closed-back with the same or near to the same soundstage experience! So if anybody out there is in a similar situation as me and is looking for an open-sounding headphone but needs the sound isolation of a closed-back this is probably the best option available without making compromises. So check it out and hit that "REQUEST" button =)

KiiddoI've spent thousands of dollars on headphones, even in just this last year. Absolutely no headphone that is closed can compete with an open one. Not a single one out there, bro. And the closest is the th-900 at 1200 dollars new (and it still suffers a bit from recessed mids, and it's technically not closed but semi-open). k553 isn't bad, but it's got some highs that are a bit harsh and a midrange that is a bit recessed, making vocals take a slight seat backward. Best closed I can think of for the money are going to be the pm-3. They are a bit laid back but have a great midrange, and have excellent isolation and average weight. Also they are planar so they sound fast, very fast. I know they're like 400 dollars, but that's measly when you can enjoy a good can for a decade, right? Or tell me your music preference and I can help you search. mdr-1a isn't that bad if you like a bit more bass (though it's build quality is just okay, but hey it's just 150 bucks).

siidheeshWrote the comment before I joined the drop, I eventually pulled the trigger lol. I've been going back and forth between deciding on those 2 pairs of headphones for a few weeks now. It's difficult to find accurate information when lots of different people tell me different things about them and I don't know anyone irl who has a pair to try out. I was initially led to believe that if I got the K7XX's that the sound leaking from them would be just as loud to people in the same room as it was to me, but a few other people on another forum told me that isn't the case and that it shouldn't be too loud as long as I don't have them blasting. I still would like the K553's to drop as well though, it would be nice to actually finally find out what they are like. There's so many glowing reviews about their soundstage which is rare for a closed back headphone!

UzuzuI ended up just buying the K7XX's, although I hope to nab a pair of K553's as well if they ever drop. Hard to ignore all the glowing reviews about them and I'd love to do a comparison. Right now though they're pretty expensive on the CAD Amazon page though so I'll have to wait for a while for Massdrop to lower the price and there aren't many requests yet. I don't have a ton of experience with lots of different headphones and am just getting into the audio-enthusiast world, I'd call myself a tech-enthusiast who is also interested in audio now =) But to answer your question, I like all sorts of music, from rock to alternative/indie to several genres of EDM (breaks, uk garage, dubstep, techno, hardstyle, hard dance, hard trance, progressive, house, electro, etc) so I'm kind of all over the place. I would say that I want a headphone that's tending to be more warm, full and lush sounding rather than a bright and dry/harsh kind of sound. Since I like lots of EDM there has to be good punchy bass extension but I wouldn't want a basshead headphone that muddies up everything else, just something that has good bass when it needs to. The ath-m50x's I have right now don't do certain vocalists justice, from Grimes to Dallas Green to Florence + the machine.. none of their vocals are where they should be imo.. not to mention there's absolutely no sense of space or depth, but hopefully the K7XX's fix all that though =)

KiiddoWith open headphones like these you have to sometimes take them off and double check they arent being too loud and just turn down the volume a smidge when you stay up late but thats about it. (theyre doing just fine for me in a dorm room)
