Nathan000You'll definetly need an amp for the 650. The Akg's will sound great even without one.

Nathan000For $199 these can't be beat. I've had mine for a year now and use them daily. The only "mod" I did was add a 1.5m after market cord. Cancelled a pre-order on Amazon's restock of the Philip's X2. I sold a pair of AKG K712 PRO after A/B'ing them against the K7XX for almost a month. My ears couldn't tell a difference. Nor could my wife's. Could you find the HD650 more to your liking? I don't know. Sound is subjective. But I can tell you I'd be very surprised if they did much more right than these do. Without audiophiling a hundred different pairs of headphones, I'm calling the K7XX the best buy out there for $199, in an open backed headphone.

RocktoberThe price does seem to be very attractive, but I've heard that these are very picky in terms of what systems it will work best with due to its odd low impedance, and current hungriness. I really don't want to end up spending twice as much the price of the headphones to make it sound decent.

Nathan000The k7xx do need an amp to be audible. On board would be bottlenecking these headphones. I owned a pair of hd 650s, I even ordered a pair of hd 6xx they are fantastic! As mentioned before the k7xx is very picky and harder to drive than my hd 650s. If this is your one time investment in headphones get the hd650s, you can find them on sale all the time.

Nathan000If you have the patience, I would wait until Massdrop drops another HD 6XX or just get AKG K7XX now and get the HD 6XX on the next drop. They're both great headphones, but HD 650/6XX is better.

Nathan000 6XX has more resolution and the mids are just omg, but for me the bass is too much which creates this sort of warmth to the sound, which might be a good thing if u dont like "dry" sounding headphones. That aside, I would still prefer the HD 600s any day. But yeah, if u like bass and prefer detailed mids, go with the HD650 /6XX if u r patient XD

Nathan000Yea, I've heard about it too, but then I also wanna know where they found that information from. Seems irrational... They've only sold 5000 units in the first run and expect to have 100K of people requesting it? If there was 100K amount of request... then how many would they sell on the next drop?
I don't know how people can say something out loud without having any evidence... Was it Massdrop or Sennheiser that wanted 100K request in order to have another drop? Do we even have 100,000 active community members on Massdrop? Can Massdrop see why kids love the taste of Cinnamon Toast Crunch? How many licks does it take to get to the center of a Tootsie Pop?

MiraMinxNot only I'm interested in quality headphones and amps, but I'm also a Gamer. Yes, I do have both. If I have to clear your question and if you want to hear my honest opinion, then I would tell you to go with the K7XX's. HD 6XX/650 is considered "better" than the K7XX, but the reason why I would tell you to go for the K7XX's is because it has a larger sound stage and the comfort level is amazing.
Two important factors that a gamer needs when it comes to headphones are comfort and sound stage.
I can literally wear K7XX's for 10+ hours without any discomfort and you won't feel any pressures or clamping force around the head. Not only it has clean detailed sound, the sound stage is so wide you can hear the surroundings of the enemies and the environment. One thing I'm a bit disappointed is the bass, it's not heavy or too low, it just feels like it's lacking a bit (which most open back headphones do lack). Overall, AMAZING investment for any gamer.
Trust me, my experience with playing games changed me when I've purchased my first K7XX. (I recommend you to invest an amplifier in the near future)
You're welcome to ask me anything - anytime.

TheGodlyAvengerI wear glasses and I feel no discomfort while wearing my headphones with it. These pads feels like soft clouds. About the ears touching the tip part... it really depends on your ear shape and size, but you know a lot of people exaggerate their personal problems or opinions so I don't take them seriously. My ears are just fine. Nothing irritating.

TheGodlyAvengerOverall, the headphone material is built with high grade plastic. I've dropped my headphone many times (from 4ft-5ft height) and not a single scratch. I usually wear them when I'm drawing also and I constantly wash my hands time to time and realized that the print "K7XX" on the sides are faded now. If you also have sweaty hands and you care about the quality of the product, I would watch out for that.
Now I've been worried time to time since the thin strings on the sides are the reasons holding the headband together when you put them on. If you accidentally cut them, the headphone will be having trouble resting on your head. But, what are the chances that you'll accidentally cut the strings when they are placed somewhere reasonably safe and either way... all you'll be doing with this headphone is putting it on your head and not throw around with it. Many reviewers reviewed the durability, and it's very solid and flexible. The strings won't break easily. When you put them on your head, the strings won't even stretch that much, unless you have a very large head.

KITTY LOL, my bad. I quoted my friend who said Sennheiser was doing the hd 6xx as a one time deal to get their product circulating to new users who haven't dove into high end headphones. It doesn't make sense to keep on doing it again at such a low price. It ruins their business model and the current price of the hd 650/600s.

Nathan000Very few headphones made for the commercial market these days *require* an amplifier, with the possible exception of some the electrostatics. Note that I said "headphones", not just AKGs. This also applies to the Senns, Philips, Shure, Beyerdynamics and all the rest of the headphones out there that use a dynamic driver. Most devices including cellphones, tablets, laptops and even the motherboard in most PCs will have ample ability to drive them to levels capable of actually damaging your hearing. Unless you are already hard of hearing I recommend you buy the headphones first, try them with what you already have available, and go for an amp later if they still don't get loud enough. Remember, it's called an "amplifer" for a reason, and not a "betterfier".

TheGodlyAvengerI can second what KITTY has said about the elastic. I've been running AKGs with this design for several years, beginning with the release of the K701. I've never had a problem with the elastic breaking. I understand the skepticism. They don't seem like a very good design but if you take proper care with them you should get many years of reliable use.

KITTYThanks for the info KITTY, I've been very happy with the Razer Krakens I've had for the past few years and the digital surround sound they use and never really considered using anything else until I heard some mid level IEMs and was like WTF this sounds so so clear. Now I find myself wondering just what a pair of good headphones would sound like (and very importantly how well they will work with directional sound in video games and/or my virtual surround software I have) and ended up finding my way here because of that.

MiraMinxI don't want to recommend you anything expensive yet. I would tell you to try Fiio E10K ($75.99) or Schiit Fulla 2 ($99). I definitely recommend JDS Labs Objective2+ ODAC ($279 to over $300 depending on what version you get), but its too expensive when you buy it from their site. Massdrop drops this amplifier time to time for only $200. So, I would wait until Massdrop does this drop again.

KITTYHey KITTY, so I got my K7XXs and I'm loving how they sound so far even without a amp and dac, though I really do plan on getting one of those ones you suggested as soon as I can. But in the meantime I got a Modmic 5 on it and am enjoying myself. One hiccup though is that the plastic slider bit on the right ear cup is very resistant to sliding as compared to the left requiring me to adjust it with my hands to even them out every time I put it on and readjust it back to fully collapsed every time I remove them. Any suggestions?

" Use four small binder clips to stop the headband from moving too far. "

Nathan000You can get the O2 Amp and the O2 DAC separately and stack them together or just get the O2 Amp and DAC built in one. It doesn't matter since they're the same. The difference is the design.

BananiqNo rush, they're both different for sure, but at the same time they're both recommended. It doesn't matter which one you get first since they both create their own sound style signature and I would honestly tell everyone to get them both if they can or at least start from one of those two. If you're planning to mix and produce, I would go for the HD6XX.

KITTYThanks for advice! I was also thinking on buying them both at first, but budget does not allow me for now. I already have ML Mikros 90 which were praised on head-fi and they are really good but closed on-ears so not quite comfortable for longer use. Anyway, I am hesitating because of allegedly intimate / narrow soundstage of HD6xx , and I am quite soundstage lover. After experience with IEMs like Flare R2A and Havi B3 I am afraid I will miss top notch positioning and soundstage.
