My pair of k7xx's became desoldered inside the ear cup itself, twice now.. There are some QC issues it seems with AKG. It's a shame, because I actually enjoyed these headphones a lot.

CxxsAw man!! Now you just gave me doubts on getting these. I was suppose to check out now but I decided to check the discussion before anything else. Your comment was the first thing that Popped up. Damn, I really need a good headphones for gaming /music since these have elevated bass vs the HD650 as ppl are claiming. I really want to make these headphones last up until 10 years minimum. I can't spend money on headphones every year. :(

jakecrzI've had my K7XX for over a year now and I use them for hours every day, both gaming and music (sometimes youtube). Not a problem with them yet although you have to get used to cleaning dust off the velour earpads (a little scotch tape works great!) Had my original K701 for years without a hitch. QC issues pop up in any product that is released by the thousands.
My top pick for a super comfortable, awesome sounding open backed headphone. No real competition at this price point.

RocktoberI currently use my HD598 . I wonder it it's going to be as comfortable as these. I've had the Cloud 2(takstar Pro 80), those drivers touches my ear cartilage. I don't have a problem with drivers touching my ears, what I have a problem with is that it leaves soreness ~2hrs from the time of use. I have ears that kinda points out a bit. :( What's your claim on that?

jakecrzThe K7XX has probably the largest earcups out there. I'm not sure how soft the inner fabric would be IF my ears touched it for an extended time but it's pretty soft.
Very light weight headphones, and the thick, soft, memory foam earpads are very comfortable, even with glasses.

jakecrzI got in on the first round for these headphones, so I have had them for a while. I baby my headphones; I never drop them, I place them on my headphone stand when I am not using them, and I use my IEMs when I am out in public. It's purely a QC issue, considering that it got de-soldered TWICE. I've contacted AKG about it, and they want me to pay something like $80 to get my headphones fixed.. even though they're still under warranty. Needless to say I will not be purchasing anything AKG again.

RocktoberA lot are saying that these have improved bass over the previous versions? and also the bass on these are better than my HD598? I mean I'm not really looking for a "beats" type of bass. I am also suppose to use these for gaming too aside from music and I have read that these have amazing soundstage and have better quality bass. What can you say about that? Sorry for having too many questions, I just don't want these to be a very regrettable purchase as Massdrop doesn't have a return policy. I also have no other way of testing these or even similar spec/build like these on local shops so I am likely buying these blindly. lol

jakecrzHonestly, the HD 650's are some of the best headphones you can get for the price. If you can get in on the mahogany fostex's then do that. Otherwise, I would highly suggest getting the HD 600's or HD 650's. The 650's scale much better with your hardware.

jakecrzI love bass but am NOT a "bass head". I run Foobar 2K on my desktop with a massive freq analyzer. The K7XX are true to the source. If a song has bass, these will show it, in a natural way. I would never call these "bass light". Try Shpongle's "The Epiphany of Mrs Kugla" or Mingus Big Band "Haitian Fight Song" with whatever you have now. These headphones will do THAT. ;)
Soundstage is excellent. Sometimes spooky good. More than once I've caught sounds in songs that I never heard before that had me convinced someone was standing behind me and trying to get my attention. I play FPS (ARMA3) and sound location is essential. These are superb.

jakecrz" A lot are saying that these have improved bass over the previous versions? "
Yes. I owned the K701 for years and loved them. The K712 Pro and the K7XX (identical to my ears) both have significant boosted lower ends over the K/Q701 or the K702. They are in no way "bassy" headphones but they certainly are more fun to listen to than my old 701s especially with mainstream music. They don't seem to be as analytical as the 701 either. The 701s were like putting a song under a microscope. Good music sounded good, but if it was overly compressed or otherwise mutilated for cheap ear buds and car stereos, the 701s were very quick to point that out. Some songs I listened to a lot more than others, with the K701s, just because I couldn't stand horrible recordings. The 7XX is a bit more easy going and even a crappy recording is tolerable, to my ears.

RocktoberHow's the build tho? Do you feel that it already has some breakdown like the elastic parts... not being responsive anymore, or cracks?? I wish it had the same design as the HD650, it "looks" more durable. lol.

jakecrzNope. No problems! Like I said, I had the K701 for years (sold them in still perfect condition) that used the exact same technology. They are built better than some might think. They are very light, which is the point. Now if you want a pair of headphones sturdy enough to kill sewer rats or pound nails with you might want to shop elsewhere but if you treat them like the delicate, relatively expensive headphones that they are (that goes with the Senns and others too!) you will be fine.
As for sound comparisons? I dug this up just for YOU! :D Used to be a website called "sonic sense" that used one of those head models and extremely good stereo microphones to actually record what different headphones sounded like to the same "person". Couldn't find the original website but I found their grand shootout on soundcloud. Remember, you aren't hearing what the headphones actually sound like. You are hearing what the headphones sound like played back through whatever you are using now. But it should give you some idea of each headphone's strengths and weaknesses. At least an idea of what to expect (use the K712 sample for the K7XX):

RocktoberOh wow. thanks a bunch man. I don't know if the music is getting altered since what I have is a Closed pair of cans. But yeah, I could hear a difference between hd650 vs k712. hmmm. Don't know what I like. lol.

jakecrzThe point is that they are more similar than different. Wouldn't you agree? Someone who says the HD650 has powerful bass and that the K712/K7XX doesn't obviously hasn't listened to both of them, side by side.

jakecrzThey have more bass, but I did not find it "improved". To me the bass sounded slightly bloated compared to both K701 and Q701. However, when compared to Q701 a lot of that is just due to the memory foam pads on the K7XX. K701 seemed to be lighter on bass due to both the drivers and pads. On another note, the memory foam pads are much more comfortable.
I preferred K7XX over HD598, though i had the HD598 for less than a month before I returned them. From what I remember, the 7XX sounds more detailed and more open. The HD598 is warmer sounding which comes down to preference. As far as switching from HD598s, if you got them back during the $100 Amazon price and K7XX is $200, I wouldn't think it's worth twice the price. If price difference isn't a factor, I'd say K7XX is a better headphone.

TianZiI just don't want to regret this buy. I'm also a bit skeptical on the build quality as some people note that the rubber bands hold that top strap sits on your head will evidently give up on you at some point down the road. I'm looking at the HD650 but I don't know if I should shell out the extra money at price range of $315. The HD650 looks much more promising and seems like it'll hold out for the next 10 years. I'd go for the HD6xx but you can't get that anymore. I doubt that they'll drop soon or even at all.

jakecrzThe build quality of K7XX looks like it cut slight corners on build quality compared to the previous models K701 and Q701, at least on one part under the earpads. However, the Q701 would probably take actual effort to break considering I've run mine into a door frame forgetting they stuck that far out on my head while walking to the kitchen in the dark, and also stepped on it once. While I haven't used my K7XX much, the overall build quality inside is probably pretty similar, and should not break easily.
The part that will likely wear out over time in the elastic straps. If you get them, don't hang them by the headband, and instead get a stand that lets you hang them by the 2 bars. The elastic stretches overtime and gets loose. I've had an older pair of Q701 that I used for more than 5 years and the elastic got loose. Even if the elastic gets loose, you can pretty easily tie a rubberband to it to keep the headband functional, but it looks ugly, lol.
I'm pretty sure HD6XX drop will return if that's the one you want. Seems like all the massdrop exclusives come back fairly regularly.

TianZi...those elastic straps man. I really don't want to be cautious about those straps like a baby. I mean I'm not rough on my stuff but I don't want to be like "oh wait I gotta put it like this because this might wear off". If you put the 6xx or 650 on the same situation you don't have that "feeling" of wearing down. I'm just really caution about this purchase as I am making this my end game headphones. You can say I'm in the consumer category so yeah I'm your average gamer and that person who listens to whatever music without any preference. Heck I only have the E10k as Dac/Amp. lol. Anyway, I'm totally sold on both on the sound department even tho I never tried either one, I'm just gonna take everyone's word for it. Now It all boils down to build quality and how it solid it feels.

Rocktoberit's just a few bucks away from the amazon price. If it's 200 to 240 then I'll try my luck on ebay.
