My current headphones make my ears hot after a few minutes. Does the semi-open design of these help keep your ears cool?

programmerkevNope, really depends on what pads you use. Fortunately, these have removable pads so with pads of your choice they could be comfortable and cool. Stock pads are fine IMO but you can find a better one is what I'm saying.
Getting back to @RotemK on my earpad adventures, picked up ~7 dollar pads mentioned on page 12 (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00KLPRQMO) and popped out Beyer pads from the DT880.
Immediately knew I wasn't going to like them cheap velours because well, as you can see in the photo below (I need a real camera, damn that awful quality) the ear-hole is smaller. Don't like having pads touching my ears, especially not with the slightly rougher material this is made out of. They're also noticeably more stiff than other velour pads I own. Earpads fit well on the headphone and that's really about it. I'd actually take stock pads over these, but certainly would reconsider if they had more room for my ears. If nothing I stated bothers you and you really want cheap velours just to try them out even, they're there. Even so, I feel like you could do better than these with the number of knockoff pads out there.
Beyer pads are much better in every way by comparison (better be, considering cost difference). Earpads fit perfectly from what I can tell and they're just... Beyer pads! Solid choice if you can spend extra and can't stand pleather. I think there ought to be some good choices for pleather around somewhere, so someone ought to figure that out.

WaahThanks for trying out the Beyers on these, Waah. I'll order a pair and check them out. I owned an AKG K240 MKII for 6 years before they broke. I bought the M220 to replace them. the K240 came with both pleather and velour earpads and the original AKG velours had the same issue, smaller ear-hole compared with the pleather ones. I wonder why AKG did that, maybe pleather has a better seal? thus having the same sound with velour requires a smaller hole? not sure. I guess the cheap ones are modeled off the original AKG velours as a replacement.

RotemKOh I see, that would make sense. Legit AKG velours probably are more comfortable in having pads touch your ears, so it wouldn't be as bad. Kind of like lower-end Audio Technica AD series which is comfortable despite most of the ear resting on the earpad (love my AD700 to this day). These cheap ones simply need better texture and cushion to allow such a thing.
Some say the K240's sound signature changed for the worse with Beyer pads, but I personally value comfort more. I couldn't discern a noticeable difference, not that I have a trained ear for detecting such things in the first place.
