1065 purchased!! Wow, this is awesome. All 1065 new owners of AKG Q701. But IMHO the lowest price can be lowered a bit more, considering the big hit in numbers. C'mon, Massdrop you can do this.

SilverstrikeNo harm asking, but unlikely to happen. If you were AKG (or more accurately Harman, who owns AKG), would you lower the price any more? On the other hand, Harman could have STOPPED the sale when the purchases reached the low hundreds, simply by claiming "no more stock" or "fulfillment issues". Then they can come back a few weeks later, raise the price by $15, restart the whole thing and still get hundreds of purchases. Not an unheard of tactic. That Harman is doing this drop (which will normally annoy other retailers) suggest a stock clearing exercise. Quincy Jones version 2 may be out before the end of the year.

royalflushHmm.. you are absolutely right there, mate. These are excellent headphone but a nightmare to drive. But if the stories are true, the music is sweet. Please suggest which DAC\AMP to buy for these under 200$. Also, does the bass mod actually work? I would love if it gives a deep bass after the mod.

SilverstrikeIf you can stretch your budget a bit, grab the Vali/Modi stack from Schiit. Used should be under $200 easily.

StillhartQuestion... what would be better? A really good DAC with an okay Amp(i.e. Magni), or a really good Amp with an okay DAC (i.e. Modi)?
Assume the individual needs to keep it under $300. I always thought it would be more important to get a really good DAC and something decent enough to drive your headphones.

WeirdGIn my personal experience, in order of noticeable differences:
Headphones>Amp>Source Files>DAC
Keep in mind that I started with a decent sound card (Sound Blaster Omni) so upgrading to a cheap DAC (the Modi specifically) did not produce any audible results. IMO, you're much better off getting a good amp with an okay DAC (Matrix M-Stage or Asgard/Modi) than an okay amp with a good DAC (Magni+Bifrost for example).
In that price range, I'd recommend buying what I am using right now: Audio-GD NFB-15. I've been through several Amps and DACs and I don't feel the need to upgrade anytime soon. I know that if I do, I'll need to spend a LOT of money for not a lot of improvement. The Q701 and the NFB-15 is a price/performance sweet spot for me.
As always, subjective, YMMV, etc.
