Received mine today in Melbourne 3152. As others have said the packaging could probably do with some improvement, but I understand the Massdrop team were swamped with orders and did an outstanding job getting them all out in just a couple of days. My suggestion to the Massdrop team, if possible, look at ordering stronger boxes and better packing tape as upon delivery my box was in a poor shape, tape had been ripped of for 1/3 of the top of box seal and the AKG box itself was damaged, one side of it completely pushed in and ripped (picture a box that's been punched). Those couple of things aside, these headphones are phenomenal. I've listened to Tubular Bells on LP over the past hour and was blown away with the balanced and clear sound through lows, mids and highs. The bass isn't bothering me at all, so I most likely won't be doing the mod. A very enjoyable listening experience at a bargain price. Thank-you Massdrop, the wait was worth it! Craig

craigmAlso got mine today in Melbourne 3161. Had similar problems with the packaging, but headphones were in perfect shape. Would suggest Massdrop look at solutions to avoid a potential issue with damage to actual product in the future.
Am a little bit disappointed that I received white, as I emailed staff and requested black, should any additional stock become available. The secondary drop suggested that more stock did open up.
Now to the good stuff.
I've always loved AKG and have been using the K550, which is the best closed back I have ever heard at a reasonable price. Nonetheless, the sound stage on the Q701 is brilliant. These give huge bang for your buck. Like anything hifi, the law of diminishing returns applies here. Have tested far more expensive Sennheisers (HD700 and HD800) and they don't sort out messy recordings like AKGs do.
Love the detailed and balanced sound signature. They're far from warm, but its the detail and the shining mids of the piano that I'm after. Not going to undertake the port mod, as the bass levels are spot on for me (although strangely not as tight as the K550), but this is just a personal preference.
Currently listening to Jamie Cullum's 'Momentum', Three Cane Whale's 'Holts and Hovers' and The Wallflowers' 'Red Letter Days'.

AndrewJMComparing to my DT880's, whilst they are far warmer in terms of overall presence, the impact on the Q701's is incredibly powerful and more importantly, well defined in the low range. Far more so than I was expecting given the ubiquitous discussion surrounding the lacking bottom end from these cans.

mountainjooI'm running these with a Creek OBH-21 headphone amp.
I think some of the differing feedback with people will come down to personal preference (not everyone loves the AKG sound signature as much as I do!), while others may come down to choice of amp or if they are using an amp at all.
These aren't bass heavy, but the bass is extremely well controlled. Without an amp, they might sound a bit thin on bass, though.

AndrewJMAn amplifier is a necessity. I can imagine them sounding incredibly faded and dull without one.
