Hey, so is this buy going ahead? From talks on the ALF Discord, it looks like this has been requested to be taken down. Especially after what I've seen from people who received their board.

Just got an email saying this board is "back ordered" so my order is cancelled and was given a $20 credit.
OmegaZero55
I checked my transactions and it shows up as cancelled.
I'm actually VERY interested in this but the fact that the drop has been up for days with no one interested in addressing whether they're selling a WKL or standard layout (or both?) has me thinking I'll sit this one out.
Although the unique Everest White anodizing is actually good, its interesting to see this posted here since I was told this was supposed to be an exclusive group buy. But after several delays, damage on received products, and delays on replacements, i'm willing to let my spot go in the GB. whoever is interested, willing to sell my spot in the actual (not so exclusive) groupbuy. Its grey color, brass plate with extra PCB and polycarb plate. EDIT: will be posting on r/mechmarket

You should post on r/mechmarket, massdrop is not a second-hand trading platform.
any insight on what keycaps these are? i know they are not included. just curious.
ltzany
SA Hyperfuse.
Even though the diffuser in the front is centered. It looks off. Don't like the design.
$330 for no switches and keycaps. That's a steal if I've ever seen one!

Lol clearly your not into the enthusiastic keyboard group. A well made custom keyboard can easily from anywhere between 350 to 450 USD(higher if its a rare keyboard). And no one ever buys a keycap combo from keyboards like this cause we be using GMK keycaps which easily cost 139USD at least. And most have their own preference when it comes to switches, unlike the standard cheap ones.
rodmc
You, Sir, definitely know nothing about we keyboard enthusiasts.

From reading the ALF Discord, it sounds like ALF contacted Massdrop and requested that this drop be taken down.

Sounds like people that bought into the private group buy are mad another group buy is happening before they even got their own kits yet. Also the kit that's already out in the wild has issues.
OmegaZero55
crazy, that's nuts to hear. thanks for sharing that. reminds me of situations where people back a kickstarter, and a retail version ships out before the kickstarter ones.
Sorting by top comments ommits one of the top comments talking about the poor quality and failed group buy from Discord. However, you can find the post only by scrolling to the bottom of the thread after sorting by most recent. Shady, shady, keyboard breaky
mini USB for a $500 keyboard in 2019 ? Why :( ?
d3adc3II
Yeah, it seems to me like it'd be a pretty simple switch, but so many new keyboards are missing them.
wk?
Is this WKL? or WK? wt...
HONK_HONK
Yes. *winks and points* But in all seriousness, I don't know.
I love ALF Studio.
For one, that logo is hideous. Second, the market is saturated enough with cnc aluminum cases and brass plates. At 300+ it'd be nice to see some progressive features and materials used. People are trying to oversell their underdeveloped brand without bringing anything new to the hobbies ecosystem. Just exclusivetity through expensive materials.
Load 2 more comments
Did I mention any of those materials in my comment? I didn't think so. There are many thought experiments to be had with cheaper materials such as woods, plastic composites, acrylic, ect. Some of the most heralded keyboards of the last 30+ years were made of plastic. And trust me, i've been in the hobby long enough to see a vast majority of them. A product can be of quality without being carved out of a solid block of platinum lmao. Your comment only proves my point that this community is full of toxic exclusivity snobs who drool on each others collection of nearly identical block of RGB aluminum. Get some class.

FoolsGoldOwl
Wood done it, acrylic done it, plastic composites done it(funny enough the most common use material for a keyboard). Please do go on what other materials are you referring too? Also if you wanna spend your hard earn money on a cheap ass material that will give it a hollow and tinny sound, sure be my guess and good ahead.
(Edited by moderator AlexPk)
Your layouts are wrong, they don't account for the WKL blockers. Also 7u spacebar, whyyyyy

There should be 2 versions, i think they showed up the wrong version in the profile pic or they forgot to add the other option.
I was looking through the specs, and couldn't find a listing for the switches used in the kit. Are the switches included, or do I need to provide those? Also, it's not clear if the keycaps are included either. Does anyone have any information on this? Thanks.

Edward351
No, the kits do not include any switch/keycaps/cable.
Edward351
No they do not included, if you have been playing this hobby long enough the keycaps that are provided are always subpar. Most people would just use SA, GMK, MT3, JTK or what not which would easily cost more than 100USD. As for switches, massdrop themselves don't have much option when it comes to switches. The more popular ones are Tealios, Zealious, Retooled Blacks, Vintage blacks, Tangerines, holy chickies, Holy invyr Pandas and etc. Which most can't be found on massdrop(neither do they have enough stock of it).
@Dovandovan I think your comment with link to QC pictures was removed together with my reply. I can't find it anywhere. Can you confirm?
Krasztest
me too. not sure why they would do that o.O but it seems all is solved with alf now. for now
How are people supposed to pick WKL (with blockers)? There’s no option.
the whole reason I wanted to get the alf was for the hyperfuse caps
Would love this so much, but the price is insanity.
Incredible! But why the everest white color add +50$? Thanks!

Takes quite a bit more work compared to normal anodization. Here is a little more info about a process comparable to what Alf uses (afaik) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electrophoresis

Ok, I didn't know, thanks!
LOL! These prices lately! I'm sorry, but if you're going to charge prices like this, should you really be including:
  • Shine through RGB logo
??? Seems like you're targeting the wrong audience.

psiclone
the rgb logo is just through rgb led.
why is the white more expensive? is it Micro Arc Oxidation or.....?

Oh cool. Also, speaking from experience MAO turns out as more of a light grey than a true white.
LevelSteam
Exactly.
this keyboard price is not expensive because the cu is expensive than al if all keyboard used al the price will be cheap
Load 1 more comment
CU I guess it refers to the copper contained in the brass alloy. That is more expensive than having all parts done in AL (Aluminum). Still, I don't think it's expensive.
mkarlsson
right
I would buy only the key caps. It looks nice!

Didn't you just drop $480 on boards? And you're balking at the price of this keyset? Not sure if serious.
sabotender
LOL, don't blame me for this.
What are the details of the ALF logo on the front? They appear lit in one photo. Are they always on when the keyboard is plugged in, or can they be turned off? Do they toggle on/off with numlock/caps/scroll? Can the colors be changed?
maximize
the logo light can change colours. you can on or off. it is controled by composite key.
Is it me or are companies taking advantage of the perceived high end market in this hobby by releasing insanely priced keyboards hoping that a few hobbiests that missed out on the original high end GBs will take the bait? Well over $300 for a keyboard kit is insane, unless you are coming in with a super high end name/rep already established. I understand Duck, Rama, Zeal etc. selling stuff at high prices they've been around and demonstrated the ability to satisfy and produce high quality products that match with the high end price. Between this and the Punchy it seems like the sharks smell blood, I expect to see an increased surge in overpriced GB coming out. Which is too bad as price and exclusivity are two of the problems with this hobby, if someone new buys one of these and they find it to be disappointing and will probably see their purchase encounter some disdain from the community it will have negative effects on new people just getting into the hobby.

Idk man, I can’t think of many TKL GBs that are sub $250. The only one I’ve got coming to mind offhand is the KBD8x and some of the taobao boards. I worked in a machine shop for a few years and now do CAD/CAM work as a side business, so I like to think I can speak fairly accurately. With the NYM boards compared to this buy it’s important to consider two things in their construction. The intricacy, and the different materials. TKLs have to be made in two pieces generally as they have a top frame that goes over the plate/PCB. This means that a separate jig must be used to hold the stock in place while it’s milled as well as setup for that next part. On the NYM boards they’re tray mounted, this means that the entire case can be machined in one go with a good milling machine. The TKLs such as this one also have many more cutouts and general complexity compared to a champfer running the entire edge of the case like my NYM96 has. The complexities might require different bits, different angles, different setups more coolant and a longer machine time. Materials like brass and the PVD finishing on them cost more than 6063 also. Aluminum is relatively cheap in the grand scheme of things when manufacturing is involved. Making the entire case out of AL doesn’t involve as many bit changes and machine setup changes or extra jigs to mill the varying parts that you have on a multimaterial board. All things concerned this is a pretty good price for what it is in all reality. Go get a quote at a machine shop for this case and it’ll blow your mind on everything involved. The setup is the expensive part, running the machine is cheap. Needing that much more setup for the different parts is how things get spendy fast. While I’m not buying this as I’m already receiving a high end TKL this later this year, I think you’re really underestimating the difference in work between this board and other gb’s that at a glance seem similar.

Honestly, this keyboard isn’t marked up one bit, relative to other customs out there from Duck, TX, LZ, Rama, TGR, Fox Lab, etc. The keyboard you got, while I’m sure is very nice, isn’t just a couple pieces of brass short of this ALF keyboard. There are lots of contributing factors to why custom keyboards are so expensive. It’s definitely diminishing returns as you go up in price ($450 keyboard definitely isn’t 3x better than the one you got), but for people who look for the little details, it’s worth it. Now, I wouldn’t buy this either, but it’s certainly not because of the price.
As someone that was in the apparently not so exclusive GB. I would say don't buy.

Thanks, but I will take the risks.
We have a new shill in da house! Move over Oldcat!
finally a decent board
ALF you should put the estimated ship date in 2020 instead of 2019. Because you know that you cannot make it, you are just too greedy man.

Well, it's good to hear that.
Dude, do you know i had created a Discord channel called "DC60 Customer Service" ? and Excuse me? Am i keeping in silence all the time?It is quite ez to just shooting ppl, but just don’t be a kid. We are trying our best, my best to fix all the problems.
I get excited every time I see an ALF... they looks so sick! BUT expensive, which is ok, however now I'm finding that people have had really bad experiences with this company. Can't spend almost $350 after seeing pics of one delivered. Bummer, MD should do a fing background check before connecting a shady company with us.. ffs...
