Can you survive as a frontier colonist in the far reaches of space? Alien Frontiers is a board game for daring players and space enthusiasts. Manage your resources and develop terraformed planets, utilize alien technology, and discover strange new worlds. Alien Frontiers started out as a Kickstarter back in 2010 and has grown to the 4th edition you see featured here.
Alien Frontiers is a worker placement game where the win condition is having the most victory points at the end of the game. At the start of each turn, a player rolls their dice which represent the player's exploration ships. Depending on the result of the dice roll, players can choose to place their dice on a certain facility on the board and gain its effects.
For example, the image below shows a player has gotten a consecutive dice roll and is allowed to utilize the Raider's Outpost which allows the player to steal a total of four resources from any mix of players or an alien card from only one player.
Players may also place their colonies on territories in the middle of the board once they acquire enough resources. Controlling a territory allows for an extra bonus and 1 victory point, but a player must maintain more colonies on that territory than the other players to keep the bonuses!
When a player places his last colony, the player who currently has the most victory points wins meaning scores during the game fluctuate up and down as players gain and lose territories/cards. By smartly assigning fleet members and utilizing resources, as well as blocking opponents from expanding, players can strategize to become the superior space colonists.
This drop also features the Outer Belt Expansion to the game, which adds an asteroid belt (seen above) to the board's map and allows for a fifth player. Additionally, it adds more alien tech cards, agenda cards, and asteroid cards to give the game even harder decision-making scenarios.
