@AllegoryGoods,
Any update on the new Etch drop? I've got some cherry Field Notes waiting. ;-)
pluvo
Hey @pluvo, we just received the new samples from Allegory, and are working on this drop. Expect it sometime later this month. :)
Oh well, it looks like it's not meant for me to really have an Etch :-( (/cc @AllegoryGoods)
alpo
Shoot us an email at service@allegorygoods.com - we'll figure something out.
I was in for this, but I really like the idea of getting one in Saddle to match my pen roll. I hear that the kangaroo is more durable and/or less likely to show wear. How well will the leather hold up in my pocket?

OK, I'm going to hold out for the leather Etch. Will we get to choose thread colors too? I'd love to get Saddle with red thread to match my pen roll.
pluvo
Yep, the thread colors and personalization options will match our other cowhide products.
Eh, more than twice as much for shipping now versus with the drop. Since allegory offers free shipping at $45 anyway, this is only a savings of $9 versus $12 something.
May just pick it up some other time instead if I still want it.

Darn! After reading your awesome reply to DaDewil about being happy to make a custom size at no extra charge, I was convinced I wanted to join this drop. I'm a dawdler, though. I'd be more than happy to pay an extra $3 and get it sooner! Any chance I can still get in on that sweet coupon action?
I'm totally on your side. We have some, uh... overzealous... legislators in the US that jump to conclusions before doing their research. I hope Cali will come to their senses soon.
BloodGain
BloodGain,
Shoot us an email at service@allegorygoods.com
Thanks! Chad
Hi all - if you have any problems with the coupon code Liz mentioned above, don't hesitate to contact us at service@allegorygoods.com
Apologies for the complications here, but we're also breathing a sigh of relief that we won't be taking any chances when it comes to compliance in CA.
Hi All,
Since our headquarters are in California, the law restricts us from selling this particular leather product. In order to be fully compliant with state law we are closing this drop down, and will not be fulfilling any orders. No group members have been charged for this item, and we are sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused.
For more information about this ban and the thoughts of Chad from Allegory, you can read his post here: https://www.massdrop.com/buy/allegory-etch/talk/359750
For all Non-California residents, Allegory has kindly offered to honor the MD price of this Etch on their website, who still want to get their hands on this notebook cover. Keep an eye on your email for this coupon code.
On the upside, we’re working with Allegory to offer a version of the Etch made from the same great cowhide that is used in the Allegory Pen Wrap and Webbie Covers, which should be on Massdrop before the end of March.
Will this be a good fit for the clairefontaine basic pocket sized notebooks? Their dimensions are 3.5 x 5.5.
DaDewil
DaDewil, It's designed for the moleskine and field notes notebooks of the same size, and we haven't tested it with the clairefontaine. The clairefontaine has a few more pages, but may still fit. If you don't mind sending us one of your clairfontaine journals, we'd be happy to test the sizing and make yours a touch larger if needed. Since they are the same footprint any modifications will be pretty minimal. Email us at service@allegorygoods.com to set this up after joining the drop.
Thanks! Chad
I strongly suggest you check with your legal council before you quote the US Constitution as the source allowing you to ship an item prohibited by state law to customers within that state. State regulation of commerce is respected only when preempted by federal law. Unless you get your kangaroo products cover by congress, California can restrict them within the borders of the state. Check in with our local CA based wineries who would love to ship to states that don't allow it.
Let's use an example - Massdrop vendors can not ship certain knives into Canadian states where they are prohibited. They will potentially be confiscated and the recipient can be fined. Usually isn't buy could be. Let's use another hypothetical - in a state where cannabis products are legal you can not use the commerce clause to then ship them into a state where they're not legal, can you?
I don't have an actual issue with kangaroo leather - the issue is observing state laws beach they're LAWS. The state gave businesses carrying kangaroo products years to liquidate stick so no one would be left holding soccer shoes they then couldn't legally sell.
The likelihood is good you could sell your kangaroo journals into my state without getting caught. But you shouldn't.
calmonte
Calmonte,
I agree, and we are exploring the issue further. My response above was simply my best guess, we are working with Massdrop to conduct due diligence on the issue as we speak.
The thing that makes this complicated legally is that possession of Kangaroo leather goods is not illegal in California, only possession with intent to sell. So the recipient isn't breaking the law as is the case in the examples you've mentioned.
Additionally, due to massdrop's unique business model - there is no legal precedent that we have found yet to make it clear who the seller is.
Essentially it comes down to where the sale itself legally happens, and this is still new territory in ecommerce. If the sale happens in Illinois, to a California citizen, then neither party is breaking the law. If the sale is legally defined as taking place in California, then it is restricted. We are working to figure that out now.
Thank you for keeping us posted about the recent change in law, and we will certainly be complying with any and all regulations if we can verify that they are applicable to this specific type of transaction.
- Chad
calmonte
Hey @calmonte, thanks for bringing this up.
We definitely want to comply with CA law, and I've forwarded this issue so that our legal team can let us know the best way to proceed. Note the holiday tomorrow, but I'll post as soon as I know more about any changes we'll have to make to the drop.
For anyone in CA who has joined, or is thinking about joining the drop, please be aware that we may not be able to fulfill your order due to legal restrictions.
Thanks all!
Not saying it's not possible to get it, but it is illegal. Massdrop - do you ship items to states where they're prohibited by state law?
Can this be sent to California? Really? We have ban on all kangaroo products in place since 1/1/2016.
calmonte
@calmonte I did receive it in Ca.
calmonte
Calmonte,
I'll look into this further, we certainly want to comply with any state regulations. As far as I know "importing" refers to products coming in from outside the country, and since we are an Illinois business I believe the purchase is considered interstate commerce so the regulations passed by California for their businesses do not apply (see The Commerce Clause Article 1, Section 8, Clause 3 of the U.S. Constitution). I will take a closer look though. While I figure that out, I will say that we have several happy customers in California currently using either the Etch or our wallet made from the same leather.
Calmonte - the rest of this isn't directed at you specifically, but I would be remiss if I didn't provide everyone with more info on why we chose kangaroo leather given that the subject of the ban has come up.
I'd like to take a moment to address this ban, and some of the press around kangaroo leather for anyone who happens to be reading this. We actually chose this leather specifically because we believe the environmental and animal treatment story is far better than most leather products. We looked at the issue very closely and found very little evidence to support any of the negative claims about the industry. Here's our thought process:
1. Most leather comes from large-scale cattle farming. A process which, in the US, means very low quality of life for the animals, and negative impact on the local environment. Packing large numbers of animals into a small space means loss of habitat for local wildlife and pollution because the land is not able to support the large animal populations.
2. By contrast, the kangaroo industry is very similar to whitetail deer here in the United States, except at a larger volume due to their overwhelmingly large population. The animals live their whole life in their natural habitat, in balance with the local ecosystem. The Australian government closely monitors the population (which has been known to double in a single year) and issues hunting licenses to keep the animals from over populating and eradicating their own food source. The net result is much less environmental impact and much higher quality of life for the animals than the vast majority of leather available.
3. We have a deep respect for those who choose to avoid animal products entirely, and we take environmental responsibility very seriously as I hope is apparent by the amount of thought we put into our materials choices. But, based on our research, if someone is going to use leather products, kangaroo is actually one of the best options available. Not to mention that its design properties, including more longevity than cowhide shaved to the same thickness, mean longer product life, fewer purchases, and less material consumed over time.
4. Here in the US we see kangaroo as an exotic, cute, and perhaps rare animal due simply to its distance and our lack of interaction with it. This has led to a few people with large followings making noise about the use of kangaroo products. In Australia however, where people are more familiar with the animal's population level, dangerous behavior, and other facts about the species - these misconceptions are not present. In fact, there is a growing community of Australians who only eat plant products and kangaroo meat (kangatarians, similar to pescatarians here in the US) because of the exceptionally low environmental profile of the kangaroo industry.

@AllegoryGoods I have joined this drop again as for the very little time I had it, I actually loved it.

Great, expect a little something special in the box!
Great news group! The vendor has let us know that the group's order was picked up and is on its way to our warehouse now. Based on the tracking provided these are scheduled to come in 12/8. Our warehouse team has been forwarded tracking info and will be standing by, ready to get these packed up and turned around as soon as they come in.
Sometimes shipments get delayed en route, not to worry as we will keep the group posted throughout the process and notify you all if anything causes delay.
Thanks for your patience and expect an update from us on 12/9 or sooner if something comes up.
We are in contact with the vendor and awaiting updated shipment estimates from them. We have a call scheduled first thing Friday morning and should get a bit more visibility in regards to when we can expect these in our warehouse. We will update the group as soon as these are on the way.
Thanks for your patience and expect an update from us on 11/30 or sooner if something comes up.
Thanks again for joining this drop! With your help we were able to make it successful for the community. We've just submitted the group's order with the vendor for the Allegory "Etch" Kangaroo Leather Journal and they are working hard to prepare it for shipment.
As soon as the group's order is ready at the vendor's location, they will send the bulk shipment to our warehouse in New Jersey where our warehouse team will break it up into individual orders and ship them directly to you! The current estimated ship date from our warehouse is 12/8.
Rest assured that we we will provide you all with updated information regarding the status of your order throughout the process. You can expect an update from us by the end of the day Pacific Time on 11/25.
Got an "Etch" during the last time it dropped and I'm super happy/impressed with it. Very high quality leather, and it broke in very quickly, unlike some other leather pieces I've owned over the years. I have no complaints as of now with it, and I don't imagine that I will have any in the future.
I can't say I'm terribly impressed with the one I purchased last drop. The card holders on the back are 100% useless, and kill some of the look/structural integrity of the leather. And most importantly, they do not fit the actual Moleskine notebooks of this size. The small hard covers - the ones I actually carry/use. They only seem to fit the micro, like 35 page long, super short soft cover Moleskine notebooks. I've never seen anyone need to protect that micro notebook with such a case. They're disposable, where the small hardcore notebooks are anything but. You're constantly running out of pages and moving on to the next one.
To those considering, take this as you will. I kind of wish I had skipped on this drop. The price paid for what I got, and how I'm able to use this didn't quite stack up. Lesson learned for the next time.
shard_inc
This cover was made for snug fit for Field Notes/Moleskine cahiers and jeans backpockets in mind and imho is perfectly great at it. If you want a loose leather cover for pocket notebooks that already have hard covers, (ex. female purse carriers or Midori-thick organizers fans) look into the Rustico Field Notes leather covers. YMMV as I'm not sure why a notebook with a hardcover still needs another cover and I'm not really into the loose-fitting ones and prefer tight but supple covers instead. But I agree with you on the card holders. Then again, being a backpocket guy, I'd never use my covers for my credit cards.
Strumm
Thanks for your feedback. Strumm, yes, you are 100% correct. The Etch is designed specifically for the pocket notebooks (Cahier, Fieldnotes, etc.) not the smaller hardcover notebooks.
shard_inc - I'm very sorry the Etch isn't exactly what you hoped it would be. We want each of our customers to LOVE their Allegory products. If you would like a cover that covers the type of notebook you carry please drop us a message at service@allegorygoods.com and we'll work something up for you. Of course, taking into consideration you already purchased an Etch as far as pricing is concerned.
Same here. The supple leather gets better as it ages and is quite durable. Currently my favorite pocket notebook cover out of five different ones. I have nitpicks though and hope Allegory sees our feedback here: the strip that holds the notebook is too narrow and is a pain with two notebooks. It's fine with a single notebook but a single Field Notes is less bulky without a cover anyway. I hope we'll get Ver.2 that improves on this shortcoming. Would love Allegory to keep taking my money with this Etch.

Nice addition, dubldart340. That is similar to the solution we were considering for folks who want to carry two notebooks in the cover.
Thanks for the opportunity to discuss this and opening the lines of communications with your loyal customers. In my perspective, the snugness, fit and dimensions of the product is already second to none. Out there, I don't think there is another Field Notes cover that is as small and snug as this is yet at the same time having that supple feel while retaining strength. Personally, I wouldn't want a bigger dimension product than what the etch is now because imho this is what makes the etch shine above the other covers. All we need is to have that strip wider and we can call it a day. Kinda like a minor revision or a ver. 2.
As for the quality of this kangaroo leather, unlike the other leather products I own, cowhide, horse cordovan, bison, croc - this kangaroo leather is quite amazing because it doesn't retain scratches and scuffs. I'll see a scratch/scuff one day then a few hours later, the patina and natural sheen seem to cover up that scuff. Certainly quite unique and a welcome aesthetic quality. I own the Levis Silver Tab that has a silver button on the outside of the backpocket and this button is a big enemy for my wallet and other leather stuff but only the etch seems to be getting along with the daily friction with that button. Overall, can't praise this product enough.
Got this during the last drop. Terrific . The leather is pretty amazing, and holds up well so far to the abuse of my jeans pocket.

I don't think leather falls under the category of 'smart-sourced', considering the environmental impact. Is there any more information on how this leather is sourced? The impact of it vs. using a synthetic cover(like moleskine)?

Hey, an Aussie here. Kangaroo's are in no way endangered or highly sought after due to nonavailability. We need as many reasons to export / have a reason or market to keep their numbers down. :)
DannoMan
Exactly, DannoMan. We chose to work with kangaroo over other options for our small leather goods because per mm thickness it is the strongest leather in the world. It is also considered a very eco-friendly leather option.
From our kangaroo skin supplier: There are estimated to be over 55 million kangaroos in Australia and of these only about 3.5 million are harvested every year. Kangaroos are one of the most populated wild animals in the world. All our kangaroo skins are harvested sustainably and there will not ever be a threat to the species due to the large areas of National Parks and Reserves that act as a safety refuge for kangaroos. It is a known fact that after years of severe drought kangaroos can increase their population by over 100% within 12 months and it is actually good for the kangaroos to be managed so that they are not overpopulated.
We also use only veg-tanned leather which is tanned using tannin and other ingredients found in vegetable matter, tree bark, and other such sources.
I fund Allegory on Kickfurther and must say that they are a very responsive team with timely updates to the community. I'd definitely be interested in a drop on their messenger bag or even some of their pens.
They should just bloody geoblock aussies from this drop. If i wanted a kangaroo pouch i'd bloody go out back and grab one off the heap.
