Available exclusively on Massdrop from Chicago’s Allegory Handcrafted Goods, this fountain pen is made of ancient kauri wood that’s more than 50,000 years old. The oldest workable wood in the world, ancient kauri shows just the earliest signs of petrification. The small veins of mineral deposits (called “whitebait”) give the barrel a beautiful, luminescent grain, complemented by the gleaming chrome of the hexagonal grip and end sections. The magnetic cap opens to reveal a German-made stainless steel nib and posts easily to add more than an inch of length while you write.
Note: The fountain pen comes standard with a M nib, which can be upgraded to EF, F, B, 1.1 italic, or 1.4 italic (+ $25). For a matching set, add the ancient kauri wood rollerball pen (+ $60).
Fifty thousand years ago in what is now northern New Zealand, a major natural event felled huge forests of kauri trees that had been growing for 2,000 years. The same event also created bogs in the area, which protected these giants from the elements. Homo sapiens didn’t reach this area until about 10,000 years later. Today, the trees are typically found under farmland, where they are carefully excavated before the ground is returned to its previous contours. As part of Allegory’s commitment to sustainable sourcing, the company makes a tree-planting donation to the National Forest Foundation with each pen sold.
