It might just be me but I've been field testing the mod mic 4.0 for the last week or so (used it for VOIP at work and gaming with friends) and It's hard for me to get to acceptable volume levels without introducing too much noise.
I've connected the mic in to on board audio (goes without saying this is the worst option, and most people will get crap sound from this method) a USB sound card , as well as the Behringer Xenyx302 USB Mixer which has gain and mic volume settings for 3.5mm mic jacks (a nice plus that a lot of higher end mixers will not include)
The Behringer had the ModMic performing the best, but still required an amount of gain to get to acceptable volumes that introduced too much noticeable noise. I added a Cloudlifter CL2 for more available clean gain, and I can get nice and loud, but still I couldn't help but notice that the mic was quite sensitive and when my voice gets to a decent volume there's noise.
Windows mic volume I've toyed around with in addition to the mixer settings just to point out that those settings weren't forgotten about.
I found the cable just a touch too long with any set of cans I've paired this up with (Shure SRH840, Sony 7506, Senheisser HD555). My organization method was the included clips as well as velcro zip-ties while also feeding through the coiled end of the headphone wire when available. This still left me bundling the wire at the very end leading to a bit of added weight.
Mind you I'm comparing this to a 2i2 Audio interface with Shure SM58 microphones, which isn't a high end set up by any stretch, but it is balanced XLR.
I haven't tried the AntLion USB Dongle but maybe this is the miracle sound card to have a decent-volume-low-noise experience.
One thing I bought the mixer for was to hear my own voice via direct monitoring, but alas this might not be the mic to use when considering that feature.
Still hangin' on to mine though!
YawnnyWe've seen this occur before with certain setups and are, honestly, unsure what is causing it, though I do recall one having an issues with a Behringer mixer, but I doubt that is the cause. (I'm the marketing guy, so don't take my word for anything on tech stuff!)
The long cord issue is why the ModMic 5 has a modular cord length, but that certainly doesn't help people who go with the 4 :).
Reach out to our tech support at CustomerService@GTdevice.com and reference this thread. I'll give them a heads up. Ideally I want you and our engineer to to get together on webcam chat so he can see the setup. It may help us ID the cause and find a solution, either by changing the engineering or finding a solution that we've overlooked.

AntlionJoeI really appreciate the response, I'll ty to hunt down my webcam again and reach out to tech support.
I was reading about the ModMic 5 modular cable and it sounded like the perfect solution as far as the cable length concern goes.
Happy to see improvements like that are being made!

AntlionJoeJoe can you comment on my questions above? in addition need to know if this has to attach to the AKG 7xxx - the mod mic is actually shown attached to those in one of the pictures. Is that attached via a magnet or via the adhesive?
ez101Ah I answered above, but just for clarity the ModMic is designed to attach to ANY pair of headphones... though not to rubberized surfaces or fabric.

YawnnyTry using a preamp. It will help with the noise level.

ShadeykHow would that setup look like using a 3.5mm mic jack? I believe the behringer 302USB already has a preamp for the mic port (although maybe not for the 3.5 mm mic). I would need to find some sort of pre amp to plug the mod mic in to correct?

YawnnyYou're referring to the mini-jack at the end? You would need a 1/4" adapter. The behringer's preamp won't be that good. Going from the 302usb mixer into computer will be better than going directly into a soundcard port as that will introduce noise also. For a cleaner sound i would go with a dedicated external usb audio interface like the apogee one. However, the cost may be beyond what you're willing to incur. The question then becomes "how good of an audio interface do i want if i'm only using the mic occasionally "

ShadeykOh it's not a matter of the ModMic being my only setup. As I mentioned previously I have a Shure SM58 with a CloudLifer CL2 plugged in to my Scarlett 2i2 which I'm certainly happy with. It's just my experience with ModMic specifically and seeing what it's going to take to clean up the noise.
As I treat this all as a fun hobby I'm certainly going to try the 3.5mm to 1/4" conversion in to the XLR input on the mixer (with the built in Pre-Amp) just to see how it cleans it up, then try with the Mic pre's built in to the Scarlett 2i2.. and go from there!
Appreciate the advice!

Shadeykif you do use a 1/4", i believe you'll have to treat it as an instrument in as it's not wired the same as a mic...double check before so as not to blow anything . Lol...i think we've arrived full circle on how to connect!

YawnnyHave you managed to find a setup that works? So far I've been extremely disappointed with the ModMic 4. Even my laptop's built in microphone sounds better.
YirgHi Yirg,
Did you reach out to our customer service? We can help (More than I can, probably) make sure everything is set up perfect. Laptops can be pretty weird, so one thing to try is to see if running it on battery and using the ModMic makes it sound better (dirty power coming from your wall may be affecting 3.5mm audio). If its SUPER quiet, some laptops really cheap out on power given to the mic port, in which case you'd need a USB adapter. Just two possible things that can cause some problems!
