JinglejinglejingI would say its worth it if you want a 15" high end gaming laptop that is still very portable.
I own the 17" version of this and love it.
New version of the laptop is out now for $2399, it has the 7th gen Core i7 (7820HK) ,Thunderbolt 3 and faster NVMe drive (SM961), not worth the extra price.
I'm going to have to wait for Massdrop to release laptops with NVidia Max-Q ... mostly because these things run epic hot and loud. I hear that is significantly reduced in designs incorporating the Max-Q tech.
WolfcapeOr you can just undervolt it, coupled with repasting... you'll have a relatively cool machine. Even my MacBooks get warm while using VMware or matlab haha.
MassdropNewbHah, MATLAB? I use that a lot...Chemical Engineering ^^
Anyway, I could undervolt it but being a student, silence in the Library is also useful. The ASUS Zephyr promises <40db even at max load, something I'm quite impressed with as MacBooks also go jet turbine on me when I use AutoCAD or any other design software. Understood, a cooler machine means the fans should turn on less. However, heat generated will inevitably come given the high strain I'll put on it when calculating out reactor sizes. I thank you for your suggestion, as it is most definitely valid, but it's really hard to find compromises. The Max-Q seems to be the closest for this generation of laptops.
Yeah, the Aorus is a great machine. It's a little spendier, but for weight/performance it's the best around. You may have to deal with high thermals, but it's a very good option.
MassdropNewbThe weight/performance was one of the main selling points for me. I've been lugging a desktop replacement back and forth from home to work for a good number of years. It's been a literal pain in the neck. The past year or so that I've owned this has been liberating. I bought an extra charger directly from Aorus to keep at work which has made things even easier. Razer's laptop charger works with this and is slightly lighter, slower at charging, and more expensive but might be a nice option if you travel a lot.
This is actually a really good deal compared to other retailers. Newegg has this model for the same price but open box. Compared to the previous MSI bundle that a bunch of suckers jumped on, the Aorus takes the cake!
You are right about the newer CPU. I mistakenly thought the CPU was a 7820HK :P
That said, this laptop has a desktop class GTX1070 while the MSI only has a 1060. The MSI laptop's screen is pretty horrible with only 94% sRGB gamut and 170 degrees view angle. Any computer above $1000 should come with 178 degress IPS 100% Adobe RGB support.
