How come there's no images for the output lines, are they standard 5-way binding posts?

None of my speakers sound very good at all until they have about 20-30 wpc.
Most bookshelves are rated at a floor of 20w, 4 or 8 ohms. Shit, my headphone amp even puts up good numbers compared to this.

Methinks you've not experienced a set of transducers with an efficiency rating of 102dB @ 2.83V / 1m. That none of your "speakers sound very good at all until they have about 20-30 wpc." confirms VolvoSPeeV70R's comment that "you sir must have very very inefficient speakers."

I am new to Massdrop and am looking for help. I got my amp 1-1/2 weeks ago and it has not worked since day 1. The amp produces a hum followed by a clicking noise about every 2 seconds through the right speaker. No other sound comes out from the speakers. The tubes do not glow nor get warm. I tried replacing the 6N4 with a new 12AX7 and replacing the EL34s one at a time with a new EL34. Same problem persists. Has anyone encountered this problem before? How can this be fixed? How can I contact APPJ to get help?

AS12If you click the icon on the top right of Massdrop, it should have a link to your transactions. From there, you can contact Massdrop support about this transaction and they can hopefully help you out.

Burning mine in now a couple days...thus far sounds even better than my Fatman hybrid tube amp ...plenty of power driving 92 db Paradigm Mini Monitor v6....But one of the feet is bent from shipping or whatever damage...have not tried to bend it back. There are certainly better looking amps but this one, I think, has the smallest form factor - I will be moving it to my kitchen where it should be a major improvement over my old Quinpu A6000mkII hybrid tube amp, driving very old but best sounding desktop speakers ever: Monsoon mm100 flat panels (not using the subwoofer/driver any longer). Anyway happy so far...my first class A fully tubed amp ever!

olneyleeI also added a supercube subwoofer (model 4000) so low bass is incredible. Also I have a little bluetooth receiver just to the right of the APPJ so I can stream from my cell phone. Kitchen homemaker heaven. The wife has not said a word...as I am the cook in the household...I would consider another APPJ for my desktop system at work, they are that good and inexpensive. Also - I rolled in 6CA7 tubes which are a bit less dynamic/groovy and a bit more extended highs/peaky. Either set of tubes (both EH) are very musical, overall I like EL34 a tad more...

Hopefully it sounds better than it looks. Need to ditch the gold-colored face plate, and either spell the name right or leave it blank.

What is the difference in function between driver tubes and power tubes? I've searched all over and can't figure it out.

thebigtunaYou can think driver tubes as preamp tubes and power tube as power amp tubes. Typical line in does not have the right power/current to drive the power tube.

thebigtunaThe "driver" label is a misnomer, since the smaller tube isn't actually driving the low-impedance speaker load. The larger power tubes that are carrying more current are doing the driving of the speaker. Hope that clears up any confusion.

I promised to update how Massdrop resolved my concerns. In a previous post I mentioned a problem that I had with the preamp socket. Massdrop offered me two resolutions. I could return the Appj and get a full refund, or I could keep the item and get a $50 partial refund. I choose the later. The amp works I just have to carefully insert the preamp tube at an angle. Now whether the socket will last a long time and sustain a lot of tube rolling is questionable. Although the amp and tubes are still burning in, I like the sound quality, and it goes perfectly well with my speakers. My speakers are Zu Audio Dirty Weekend with Druid drivers. They are 16 ohm 101 db speakers designed to be combined with tubes, so the amp powers them to concert levels if desired. I replaced the tubes with Tung-Sol EL34 and 12ax7, which is a huge improvement over the stock tubes especially the preamp tube. Overall, I'm happy with Massdrop's resolution. I thought people would want to know about this, especially since there were questions about how reliable Massdrop is about warranty issues and so on.

robb37I also don't doubt Massdrop's customer service one bit. I just doubt the bang for the buck sometimes, for some drops...

Has anyone else had quality control issues with this amp? My came with the preamp slot sunk into the amp at an angle. You have to carefully insert the tube. If you don't it will not play or only play one channel. If you are careful enough it will take the preamp tube, but it's not stable. I've complained to Massdrop because that's how it arrived. We will see what Massdrop does about it.

Mine came in with that issue as well, along with the transformer cover being smashed on one side. I am wondering if APPJ just unloaded a bunch of scratch-and-dent units through massdrop. The shipping box didn't show any signs of damage.

DonQ50It's a decent price if you factor the included EH EL34 power tubes @ $15 each. The cheapest Ebay listing I've seen for this amp is $310 WITHOUT tubes. For more perspective ... the APPJ EL84 x 12AX7 3.5 Watt version is $175 from TubeDepot. For $279 ... this APPJ EL34 offers double the power and more tube rolling options (KT77 / 6CA7).

Can I hook it to my Dynaco PAS-3X? Is it powerful enough for my Dynaco A-35?

You don't need 12W or even 6W to drive Klipsch. My 300B , KT88 or even the lowly FU50 single ended amps can drive KG3.5 or KLF20 loud enough with volume knob around 10 o'clock position. They can even drive Legacy Focus with room shaking bass.

PawPawDogI have a 6L6 switchable SET/SEP, and I know from my own experience that's not true. With my 12 watt Scott you can get room shaking bass w/ my KG's, but not my 6 or 8 watt 6L6. And it depends on which DAC I'm using too. My 6L6 doesn't get loud enough for me. I went, and bought 98db Klipsch RF-3's to fix this actually. Even those don't cut it for me when I want to rock out. My full range drivers do get real loud, but no real bass to speak of. I actually put together a SS system to use for rocking out, because neither amp cuts the mustard, for me anyway.
It could be you're using a different source, or something. Or maybe you don't need it as loud to make you happy. And my ears aren't the best. Or maybe it's just my amp. But you can't just make a blanket statement. I'm not the only one that feels this way either. I've read plenty of comments from people that agree with me. I think a better statement might be "many people will do fine with it" or "most 6 watt amps will drive them fine depending on your setup" or "in my experience 6 watts will drive KG's fine" etc. So on, and so Forth.
But everybody has different ideas of what they're happy with, and not every setup is the same. In my own personal experience your statement is simply not true. Especially since many tube amps are quite bass shy. I know my 6L6 is. More so then my Scott anyway. So I'm definitely not getting wall shaking bass with any of my speakers. And certainly no bass slam with either amp. My 6L6 is new, but uses vintage transformers. That is probably part of it too I assume. And room size is another issue. I have a small room, but if someone thinks they're going to be happy with 6 watts on 94db speakers in a large room because they read they would on here. They're going end up very disappointed IMO.

Any thoughts on how this would drive some Elac UB5s in a small-ish room? I know they’re pretty power hungry speakers and this isn’t a hugely powerful amp.

erthanI really disagree with the other poster. I have this amp and it gets very loud and I have it powering a pair of 88db old jbl speakers.

erthanUB5's trade efficiency for size and bass. They won't pair well with a low powered amp.
