Can you tell me the vph (vibrations per hour) of the Calibre AN2846-9 movement? I've seen different answers in different forums, and no information on the Armand Nicolet website. Also, will the blue dial version be offered again? Thanks
I love the smoothness of the sweep of a second hand operating at a high beat rate (28,800 vph). To me, it exudes a higher level of quality. It also commands a higher MSRP. No doubt the J09 is a beautiful, well built watch, and the ETA 2846 a solid, workhorse movement; but I feel at it's price point the watch should have a high beat movement. This may not be important to some, but it is important to me.
Best regards!
KevinG You're talking about the difference of eight beats per second versus six beats per second, and at that rate, I highly doubt your eyes could tell the difference!
Dr7854I won't tell you what your eyes can and cannot see. That would be presumptuous. I will tell you that I have been collecting watches for over 20 years and have several examples of both beat rates. I can easily see the difference, whether viewed comparatively or individually. I suspect there are other members of this community that can also detect the difference.
KevinGI'll rephrase. The human eye, along with the human brain, can't see, and count 6 bps,or 8 bps, PERIOD! With the possible exception of master watchmakers who have been adjusting these rates for decades, possibly seeing somethings off, or comparing the two side-by-side, and being able to tell you which one is beating faster, but even they can't physically see to count whether a balance wheel is "beating" 6 bps , or 8 bps or one or the other beating fast or slow, at 7bps, that's just BS!
KevinG BTW – if I wasn't working on other projects, and had the extra cash, I'd likely grab two of them! One on the steel bracelet( Silver , or taupe (?) dial), and most likely the black one on the rubber bracelet. Either way it's a steal of a deal, a beautiful watch, and being it's an AN, no doubt a beautifully built watch !
Dr7854I joined this discussion seeking information to make an informed choice on buying this watch or not. My thanks to GideonH and StainlessOnly for supplying that information. I didn't join to debate my personal preferences in watch movements or my ability to discern the differences between them. As such, I will not waste any more of my time replying to your comments.
Best regards!
Dr7854Surely you're joking? You know that a movie is 24fps? It doesn't matter if you can't "count" the beats, it will appear smoother if there are more per second.
Dr7854Just to mention... I can very easily see the difference between the 6 bps of my Seiko and the 8 bps on my dad's Rolex. No need to count the beats to actually see the difference, if you get what I mean. If you see 2 cars passing in front of you at 30% different speeds, you don't need to know what speed it is to know which is going faster. I'm not even sure why you bother trying to prove your false point with people. Just put 2 automatic watches next to one another, one at 28,800 and one at 21,600 and tell me if you don't see a difference, that will settle it. This being said, I love my Alpinist and am fine with 21,600, but the difference is clearly visible and I understand people who mind it... No need to be square in your reasoning/selling cause it's a (beautiful) square watch my friend! ;)
Dr7854You would be shocked at what some people can see and feel. Many people cannot stand a 60 hertz monitor and must have 120 or 144. I cannot tell the difference, but others absolutely can. 8 vs 6 per second is actually quite significant. Although at this price point I think that is a bit extreme for a new watch. $1300 is ETA 2824 territory.
Dr7854You are completely incorrect. People can see far more than that. I have gone insane with 20 to 30 millisecond latency. It makes certain activities painful. You are talking about orders of magnitude larger. People can absolutely tell far more sensitive differences than six to eight per second. Check out gaming on a TV vs. a good monitor and you can massively tell far more subtle differences. The average person may be oblivious to such differences, but for many of us it matters. I personally could not care less for a watch movement to be 21600 vs 28800, but I absolutely KNOW that humans including myself can see differences far less than an eighth of a second. You are misinformed on this one.
Dr7854I have been looking at this watch for a year and never seen a better price, or even close for that matter, I have Rolex and Omega and Zenith. I like the semi-Genta inspired sport watches and this is one of the best, without being a direct 'homage' or 'knock off'. And it is from a respected maker.
KanshaLove this watch! Just remember, though it is very sporty on the rubber strap, not that you couldn't dress it up, but it's not an actual sport Watch, and it's not something you can go diving with. It only has a water resistant see of 50 m, which in my opinion shouldn't be taking beyond a pool (Apologize for some miss wording, but wouldn't allow me to correct spelling)
Dr7854Are you telling me you REALLY can't see the difference between these two seconds hands? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ETcGJJWGtYQ To me there is a clear difference. I've been wearing a 21600 bph watch for only about a year, and I'm used to how it looks. I'm confident that if you handed me an anonymous watch, I would be able to tell whether it was 21600 bph or something higher. You don't need to be able to count the beats individually. Your brain does the work to tell you
Dr7854No, i know this isn't a watch meant for sport, but the style is called a Sport Watch. This includes the Rolex DJ and DYII, the Audemar Piguet Royal Oak, the Patek Nautiius and Aquanaut, the IWC Ingenieur and their ilk.
It does not include 'tool watches' like various divers, Milgauss, or Panerai. Nor is it a formal dress watch although I am sure to wear it in less formal dress situations (suit, not tux).
I did buy mine on the bracelet. For real sports, I would wear a G-Shock and for dress I wear an Omega 18K white dial 2-hander on black aligator (tux wear, lol). There are different watches for different uses!
JamMastaJewI can see the difference, now that they are placed side-by-side. But I can also say that I am a fellow who needs and therefore likes the Rolex cyclops as it allows my eyes to see the date, so if these 2 weren't side-by-side I wouldn't see any difference.
Dr7854No one is counting the beats per second, but the difference is smoothness is obvious. Same as video games a frame rate of 60 fps is much smoother than 30 fps and is obvious.
HI Stainless,
I am reading this thread from a prior AN drop, and am seriously considering joining this time around. Was wondering if you have any additional experience or insights related to this watch and welcome your opinion.
Dear Stainless,
Your feedback helps me a great deal, as usual one can count one you to provide fact-based, unbiased, and detailed information that is not readily apparent from other sources.
I really appreciate you taking the time to respond to my query and value your opinion. You provided alot of insight on AN that I'd not considered and now will weigh before pulling the trigger (which I'm leaning towards doing).
As always, Happy Hunting.
I received my AN this week (Blue dial/stainless). Could not be happier with it, beautiful watch, great fit/finish, will move in to my rotation immediately!
