sdgsdgThe first major difference is that the akg are semi open and will leak sound much more than the M40x's. From the reviews I've seen the M40x's also have better build quality than the akg. The M40x's are also more portable and can be folded up. The sound quality is also better from what I've heard though I haven't personally had a chance to test the akg's. Overall, it depends what you are looking for in your headphones and if your in an environment were sound leakage is ok or not because with the akg's anyone in the room with you will be able to hear your music. There's also the consideration of whether the marginal increase in sound quality is worth it for you, which you will have to answer yourself.

sdgsdgone thing i forgot just rereading over there information is that the akg come with swap-able pads the m40x's don't. The m40x's come with a carrying bag. The akg also use detachable mini-xlr to 3.5 adaptor, which may be hard to find replacements for. The m40x's use a detachable twist locking 3.5 to standard 3.5, which are specific to these headphones however if you look on amazon i believe one of the other brands also sells cables of this type if you need a replacement and don't want to have to deal with audio-technica.

matt-mPretty sure the cables for the m40x are also used on some Sennheiser products, it's just a locking 2.5mm connection. Also, I own a pair--the pads are definitely replaceable, just not super easily.
