This thread is a perfect example of the whiny privileged millennial. Audioengine didn't like the drop prices, Massdrop looks for a way to release it with some type of discount, and people still bitch about it and act like this means the end of Massdrop as we know it.
I think some of people forget that Massdrop is itself a business with relationships with manufacturers and vendors and provides these drops as a service. The great thing about them, is they actually listen to the community and their customers.
I don't think this drop credit is a great idea, but it's something, and I'm not gonna knock Massdrop for trying something to get products many people are requesting into people's hands with some sort of deal. I'm not gonna knock Audioengine either, as I'm sure they have their own reasons and it's not like they're some money hungry corporate machine with tons of product to sell.
Massdrop still provides plenty of great drops on interesting items, but there have also been not so great drops. Don't buy it if you don't like it. If you were here just for this one item, that sucks, but that's the way of business, you can't please everyone.
Whiny privileged Millennial here. You’re right! They are giving some type of discount, but its store credit. I bet the majority of Massdrop users are indeed Millennials and as one myself I know that the only reason I buy anything off of here is for the significant discounts (which I am very grateful for). We are here to bargain shop. That’s why everyone is willing to wait a month for the items they buy, because they are more affordable.
The problem I have with this Drop Credit scenario is that it holds up my money. I may not buy something for the next 3 months off of massdrop so that, in this case, $80 is just in limbo. I can’t get it back, I can’t use it for something else and my wallet doesn’t know the difference between full price and store credit. So maybe I can swing $300 on a whim (since these drops only last 7 days) but $400 may put it just out of the reach of some. Massdrops discounts make getting into expensive hobbies, like audio, more obtainable and a store credit doesn’t solve that problem. At the end of the day I’m still out X amount of dollars and I have to wait 4 weeks to get my item. That makes someone as privileged as me think, “Is there really a big benefit to having $80 toward my next purchase, who knows when, or should I just suck it up, buy it off amazon and have it by monday?” Probably Amazon, which is fine.
I just fear that this will become the norm for most drops (pairing and store credit). We like Massdrop as it stands and if they make changes people are going to be pissed off. It’s like that old saying, “If you give them an inch they’ll take a mile.”
Now if this is kept in check and is used only for the most stubborn of companies than I am fine with it, but I don’t see how wanting to protect a website you frequent daily as privilege, but you old timers must.
