Has anyone bought any of the amps for the speakers. Pardon my naivity but what is the purpose of the amp (is there no headphone jack in the speakers?)? Also, how will these compare to my Bose system that has been a nice addition? Thanks, Hank

hank.davisThese monitors have are plug-and-play. In other words, they already have amps. In fact, built right into the left speaker such that you wire the right speaker to the left. So the only thing you need to do is plug up via RCA cables or 3.5mm headphone jack (which Audioengine was nice enough to include said cables). As for sound quality, Bose cannot compare. These are audiophile-approved and produce superb quality, but in my personal opinion are a little bass-lacking. Audioengine says the A5+'s produce a real-world bass, not the over-the-top, fake boomy stuff (which sometimes I like ha). This is a simple fix with any additional subwoofer, which can also be plugged into the back of the left A5+ monitor. If you need a suggestion for this, look no farther than the Audioengine S8 subwoofer, it packs a nice tight punch and compliments these monitors perfectly (but other subs will do as stated earlier).

msmarcum1991I laughed when I read 'audiophile-approved' but these are a well engineered product whereas most BOSE products are not well engineered. BOSE speakers are all bad for the money because they use poor drivers, have resonant cabinets (those I've seen, at least) and the crossovers leave some to be desired. There are plenty of good speakers out there. If you want the total package (powered monitors) for a small room or computer system, these are an excellent choice. Emotiva also makes a good offering as do other companies. I don't need anymore speakers but I am having a difficult time not picking a pair up at this price.

CujobobI did too lol when I hunted and reviewed all kinds of monitors, but once u hear these they hold up to much more expensive equipment (that of which many audiophiles approve lol). But yeah I totally get you. And at the end of the day sound is subjective. By the way, Bose kills me; for some reason I can always hear a slight hum or echo from every piece of equipment I have tried from them. It's subtle, but nonetheless annoying!
