Kinda disappointed with my overall experience with this DAC as well. Received it only to find out that I'm limited on what cable length USB I can use, so the 6FT USB 2.0 High Speed I ordered didn't work, making me go back to the stock cable and awkwardly reposition my entire setup. First thing I also noticed is that the USB never quite seems to lock in/get seated securely. It is quite flimsy and slips out easily with very little pressure and wiggles from side to side easily. Another issue here is that for some reason my D1 has to connect/download drivers every time it starts up, and some programs don't work with the D1 right away and must be closed/restarted for them to work with audio. The next issue is the intermittent popping/clicking noises, which upon further review, have to do with the many USB devices on a single hub. I've switched around my entire set up as well and have isolated it by itself without any other USB devices plugged in and the popping and clicking still continues. Because I was fed up with that, I too ordered an SPDIF to try and go that route, but now I'm not getting sound at all. Trying to figure out of it's a motherboard issue with the SPDIF but I'm so over it at this point that I might just go back to the regular pre-DAC audio set up.
Edit/Update: Got the SPDIF working and the audio quality has definitely improved and no more cracking popping sounds. The USB however is still rather loose and keeps popping out but I might just try and rig my cables in such a way that there isn't any tugging/pressure for it to fall out.

snarlingchickenAs a fellow D1 owner, I have experienced all of the same problems you have. The biggest downfall is definitely the limit of length of USB cable.
