bookThey are very good mics. But like any mic, it will have its specific uses and Pro's & Con's. It works great in situations where you want a wider-than-normal/very even pickup pattern, and for close-mic'ing without too much proximity effect. This is why it works so well on the piano when attached directly to the dividing bars under the lid, which would normally be too close to the sound source (the strings & hammers) to give you an even "picture" of the entire range of the piano, without picking up too much internal/mechanical noise. Normally you would place a pair of piano mics 18"-24" above the strings from the arched side of the harp, "looking down" into the open lid towards the strings at a 45° angle into the piano. I'm not saying that is the only mic technique to use for piano, just the most common, industry standard).
The SCX25A's self-noise is a bit higher than I'd like, but completely usable for program music. However, my current "Go-To" LDC mic (especially for the current price of 329 USD at B&H) is the CAD Equitek E100s. Absolutely stunning quality and the lowest self-noise in its class. But it is a super-cardioid and has different properties compared to this Audix. I also use the Audix D6 and i5 on my drum kit's bass drum and snare drum (respectively) with great results. I do use a modded SM57 on the top of the snare however.

bbfotoBoth the Audix i5 and E100S are great mics, I use the i5 for piano quite often, using a slightly modified approach from the one you mention above. (One above the piano and another below.) Just as with strings, cables, amps and just about every other piece of gear, there are flavors and preferences. When I toured, more often than not, our drummer used Audix drum mic kits on the road.
The above the lid approach has a few disadvantages in my opinion, first is mic placement. For acoustic reasons and plain logistical concerns, placing a long, articulating boom stand next to a piano has some common issues. One is the ease with which it can knocked out of place. While rarely an issue with a solo performance situation or orchestral setting, where a mic is almost never used, people move around on stage. That mic stand will be hit or bumped and the sound can easily change when its position does. Of course this is of little concern in a studio, however, boom stands wear out over time and can lose their rigidity. Having a quality microphone, which can be attached directly to the sound source, is key to ease of recording, mic placement and overall application in these situations.
The other issue with using the "industry standard" as you called it, is the room. Every room is different and depending on the acoustics of the room itself, having a mic, and possible having to use two is cumbersome and problematic. The amount of noise and bleed you may get from other nearby, and often far away sources in that room is going to be a problem. With a non-omni directional mic you now face the issue of proper placement and angle. Spending countless hours making minor adjustments to it placement and firing direction is not an appropriate use of time for any musician, producer or engineer. Time is money, so having a great mic that you know will do the job each time with as little hassle is key. It is also used with guitar, violin and I have used it to record djeredoo before as well.

Thanks Sean. Great microphone. Just FYI, almost all Pro Audio dealers that carry microphones will give you a 10%-15% and sometimes larger discount on Pro Audio gear all day every day if you call them and talk to them. So this Massdrop deal is decent, but it's not a huge motivator to purchase it here, especially when a lot of Pro Audio guys that would buy this level of microphone will have a few good relationships with several local or online pro audio dealers, and would be able to have it in hand tomorrow. It would be great to see the price come down a little lower (the street price is $695). Long story short, I can easly get this for $590 shipped or locally from a reputable, authorized dealer.

bbfotobbfoto,
Massdrop took extra care and effort to select a unique microphone, one which cannot be bought at just any retailer, to the community. Audix is an amazing brand indeed and while smaller than some other manufacturers, there are advantages. They can focus more on product design and are more selective with whom they allow to market and sell their products. Much time and effort went into bringing this drop to our community, we feel our users are informed and deserve a wide variety of gear options.
This mic is not mass produced, nor is it readily available online, especially not in most brick & mortar stores will you find it. The intention, as always, is to introduce great gear and unique equipment to our community whenever possible. As I am sure you are aware, MAP policy on mics such as these is strictly enforced, so we worked very hard with Audix to bring our community the best price possible.
As always it is our hope to continue to grow our community of Pro Audio and recording enthusiast and bring better products to them.

As promised folks, the Audix SCX25A Condesner Mic is here and ready for purchase. We worked very hard to bring this microphone to the community. It is truly a one-of-a-kind piece. I cannot say enough great things about this mic; the sound quality, construction, design and pristine sound reproduction are all of the astonishing. I have added a couple of videos about the mic, so please feel free to learn more and post any questions.
This first one shows how Esperanza Spaulding's Front of House tech sets up this mic:
