" While the S6 can adequately power headphones from its balanced port, this unit is at its best when stacked with the S7 and used as the DAC in the setup, as the S7 is a significantly more powerful amplifier. "
So basically your looking at $750 here per the description. Brilliant to pickup an amp / dac unit only to need a separate amp from the same manufacturer to meet their recommended setup. That's basically like buying a Civic and having the dealer recommend an Acura if you want full leather seating with Bose sound but encouraging you to buy both since the Civic gets better gas mileage.
Pass.

RosiebarAbsolutely! And that ridiculous curved/domed top to the S7 case makes resting a Martini on top while you adjust the settings precarious at best: dumb price, dumb design!
Wait--what am I complaining about? I just saved $750!!!

RosiebarSome don't need the added beefiness of the S7. Having the balanced DAC from the S6 at this price is a pretty good deal. The amp is just a bonus, really. 246 mW at 300 ohms is plenty for even something like the 6XX technically speaking.

jaydunndidditThe amp is a bonus?! Maybe for MD and Aune, not for the buying public--lots of other options to chose from.

RayFPossibly. What other balanced DACs exist in this price range that have a "decent" balanced amp? I will admit, the SE output on this unit is quite poor. If one wanted a "fully balanced" setup they would be spending a couple thousand just for something that's considered "entry-level HiFi."
For what's on offer here, to get both units it a relative bargain. I already have a powerful balanced amp so the need for a balanced DAC is more important to me. It's just a pain to find one that isn't a balanced DAC/amp without spending a stupid amount of money. There really aren't many good budget options for just a balanced DAC.

jaydunndidditGetting along quite well with a Jotunheim--has balanced out (XLR) but I remain unconvinced about the need or benefit of that feature. Meanwhile, between the speakers and headphones I have, everything sounds great as is.
I suppose it wouldn't have been difficult to find more expensive stuff, but I doubt spending twice as much would equal twice as good sound (assuming one can measure that sort of thing). There is a point of diminishing returns here that I'm not eager to pursue. Since there is no ceiling to this game, I see no reason to go searching for it. Good enough, is good enough.

RayFTotally reasonable. I was there myself for a long time and I still daily my humble little Fiio E11 and iFi nano BL at work. I have a friend that is bigger into this hobby than I am so I am fortunate enough to sample and borrow a lot of his gear. If it wasn't for his higher-end stuff and hearing what "better" sounds like i'd continue humming along with my Fiio and iFi Nano without a care in the world. But now knowing what better can sound like, I'd be hardpressed to say I can't help but try and get to that level myself.

RosiebarNo, not really. Aune includes a headphone amp with all of their DAC's as far as I'm aware. The S6's primary function is as a DAC, the amplifier is just extra.
