Is it worth buying this to use with Bose Quiet Comfort 3 headphones? Do I need to have better cans to get any benefit when listening on my MacbookAir via USB?

AmafanI will warn you ahead of time; many people (MANY) think that nobody should waste their time with Bose headphones.
The short story of their rage is that they overcharge for their sound quality.
To answer your question, chances are you will notice a difference because of the fact that intergrated sound chips (especially on laptops) tend to be of very poor quality. So, you'll likely notice a change. How much of a change? I wouldn't know. $169 dollars worth of change? I wouldn't know.

AmafanI have the Bose QC 15, but would not use it on anything like this. Why would you bother using an amp on a noise cancelling headphone? There is so many other great headphones you can get from here that will work much better then a noise cancelling headphone.I am not saying you can NOT use it on an amp but getting another headphone to do the work would be much better choice.

chaotommyI asked for the simple reason that I have them. I also asked whether I should get another set of cans. I didn't want to spend more than I needed t spend, so I asked the question. Sorry I offended.

AmafanSorry if I my reply offended you but its just not the way to treat a noise cancelling headphone. The music you hear from n/c cans have been treated already, not advise to use on an amp.

directassaultI believe the rage is that they charge high dollar for poor sound quality. The frequency and square wave responses of Bose headphones are atrocious. A low end pair of phones from reputable companies like Grado, Senn, Beyer, etc. will destroy the Bose's sound reproduction. If you're going to spend >$300 on a pair of phones, might as well get good ones.

AmafanI can't remember if the Bose QC3 can be used passively. Some noise cancelling headphones like the Audio Technicas can be used when they are powered off.
You wouldn't want to use them with the Bose QC3 when you have the noise cancelling active because the headphones have a built-in amp already and you would be double amping. However, if say your QC3s run out of batteries and can be used passively still, then this amp/DAC would be useful. But double check to make sure the QC3 can be used passively.

PootsEven if they cannot be used passively, the amplifier section of the Aune T1 can be bypassed via the RCA outs, which would still utilise the DAC and tube.
