A person in the Sennheiser HD 700 drop discussion asked what amp to buy with a $300 budget; thought I should add in here what I said, for this largely unheralded fine hybrid:
"GoliathOW With your budget in mind, I would go with the Aune hybrid amp/dac. The newest version will work with DSD files as well, now dropping: https://www.massdrop.com/buy/aune-t1-se-headphone-amp . You will want to upgrade the tube though, and you have room in your budget for that to go with the best, buy this bugle boy: http://www.ebay.com/itm/1-NOS-NIB-Amperex-6922-Rare-Bugle-Boy-Gold-Pin-Tube-England-/201790305179?hash=item2efba3b39b:g:7gYAAOSwLEtYg9XG . You are now set for some real fun. I bought the last version, non-DSD as a gift, along with a USN NOS NIB Sylvania USA USN-CHS-6922 Silver Shield Gold Pin tube and also upgraded the caps (painful work to fit the larger caps- not required unless you are so driven, I fit mine in without a gap in housing, crazy tight; https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B51p4wWH3DnzLV96UUtCM1JydmM/view ). This is a hybrid, dac-tube-opamp, lots 'O' folks will bash, not pure etc. When you have more $$ try a pure tube SE amp with the best DAC you can afford, until then you will love this hybrid, DSD ready, dac/tube/ss amp with your new HD700's. To convert your files to DSD, not needed but try it, free trial: https://www.jriver.com "
